1. Graph the func/on using Desmos and find its intersec/ons.

𝑦 =𝑥+2

𝑦 = 𝑥%

2. Solve for the area value under the curve using the Fundamental Theorem of Calculus.

Solu/on:
#!
𝐴 = # (𝑦! − 𝑦" ) 𝑑𝑥
#"

Where 𝑦! and 𝑦" are the upper and lower func/ons, respec/vely, and 𝑥$ and 𝑥% are the x-
coordinates of the intersec/ons, respec/vely.
In the func/on provided with the help of the graph from item 1, we can see that:
𝑦! = 𝑥 + 2
𝑦" = 𝑥 %
𝑥$ = −1
𝑥% = 2
#!
𝐴 = # (𝑦! − 𝑦" ) 𝑑𝑥

𝐴 = # .𝑥 + 2 − (𝑥 % )/ 𝑑𝑥

3. Create a word problem based on the model func/on assigned.

Flooding is one of the devasta/ng outcomes of heavy rainfall in a given area. It destroys
infrastructures, farmlands, livestock, and human lives and introduces diseases through the
prolifera/on of viruses and harmful bacteria. Flash floods are one form of flooding where the
water level increases very rapidly than usual as the soil and drainages absorb water at a much
slower rate compared to what the rain provides. Rivers and streams are considerable contributors
to flash floods. They tend to overflow and surge rapidly during flash floods, making the nearby
areas prone to flash floods. In order to u/lize the fact that their river is prone to flash floods and
rapid water surges, the local government decided to install a turbine in the river to harness
electricity, especially during flash flood scenarios. The electricity harnessed will be distributed to
the local community. Let 𝑥 represent the water’s velocity in the river. The river's momentum
upstream (before it passes the turbine) can be represented by the func/on 𝑦 = 𝑥 + 2, while the
func/on 𝑦 = 𝑥 % represents its momentum downstream (aTer it passes the turbine). What is the
total kine/c energy the turbine harnesses at the interval where the momentum upstream is larger
than the momentum downstream? (Note: Total kine/c energy is the integral of net momentum
with respect to velocity.)
