Part 1: OBJECTIVES:
A. CONTENT STANDARD:
The learner demonstrates understanding of: contemporary Philippine literature as a means of responding demands of
the global village; various extended text types; lexical and contextual cues; appropriate and polite oral language, stance, and
behavior; and use of imperatives, prepositions, verbs, and wh- questions.
B. PERFORMANCE STANDARD:
The learner transfers learning by: explaining the needs to be cooperative and responsible in today’s global village; using
appropriate strategies to comprehend extended text types; using lexical and contextual clues to understand unfamiliar words
and expressions; using imperatives, prepositions, and appropriate and polite oral language, stance and behavior in various
information-sharing formats.
C. LEARNING OUTCOME:

During Reading
Task 2: A. Ask students to fill in the dialectic journal as they read through the essay.

1. Which dike does the writer remember most about in this essay?
2. Describe this dike in the past and present?
3. What memories did she associate with the dike?
4. What does the dike symbolize for the writer?
5. What was the “unending puzzle’ in the writer’s mind in the essay? What was your interpretation about this?
Post Reading
Task 3: Check students’ understanding of the essay “Tarlac Dike” by let them answer the comprehension questions in
literary Activity 1.
6. What scenes did the writer capture in her mind during her early morning walk along the dike to the school?
7. How is the recollection of the author’s memories related to your own childhood memories?
8. How significant is the good friend to the writer in the essay? What became of their friendship in the end?
9. If you were the writer how would you feel about going back to a place that does not exist anymore? What is your point
of view of what happened?
10. Friendships built in life should be valued forever. Show can you remember the kindness and memories you share with
old friends? Some things also do not last forever. Are there any important things in your life that you miss? How do you
remember these?
Discuss the different elements of the essay as a literary genre and the different types of essays. Ascertain students
understanding of the literary concept by asking them questions regarding essays.

Elements of an essay
1. Introduction/introductory paragraph - hook – background information- connect- statement

Task 4: Guide students in answering the graphic organizer to summarize the key elements or features of essay.
Day 2
Literature study
Post Reading
Review the gist of the essay “Tarlac Dike”. Ask students to recall the elements found in the essay.
Task 5: Point out Connections. With a partner, ask students to log on to the website: www.goodnewspilipinas.com. Then let
them create a poster of the featured person or place. When they are done call on volunteers to share their work.
Perform Expressions. Let students practice making oral presentations by studying the poster on how to build dikes. Ponder
reflections: Ask the students to reflect on the theme of the essay. What is the theme of the essay? What ideas can you
perceive from the theme?
Day 3
Language and Grammar
Presentation
Show students sentences on strips of paper with tag questions that relate to a photo of a popular Philippine landmark. Show
the picture and say, “You haven’t been to Mt. Mayon, have you?”
Discussion
Discuss the rules and patterns of tag questions and how tag questions are formed and their responses.
Practice
Task 6: Check students understanding of the grammar concept by asking them to answer grammar practice task 1 and 2.
Grammar Practice 1: Match the sentence parts with their tag questions.

Task 7: Ask students to form small groups and to think about how life at present is so much different from life in the past.
Ask them to take note of the tag questions they used during discussion.
Day 4

Production
Task 8: Review the lesson on tag questions. Then provide a news article to the students and ask them to formulate Ws and
1H questions about the news article they read. Discuss their answers.
Assignment 1
Ask students to look for their partners. With a partner, log on to the website of Good News Pilipinas
(http://www.godnewspilipinas.com). Look for an interesting story about a young Filipino who has received recognition.
Create a poster about the Filipino and the many accomplishments you have learned about the featured person. Share your
poster with the rest of the class.
V. EVALUATION
Part 1: Contrast the present and past dike. Illustrate your answer and explain it.

Assignment 2
Write a reflection about how friendships change over the years. Have you had a friend you used to be close to? What
happened between the two of you that changed your relationship? Do you think friendship last forever?
