1: OBJECTIVES:
A. CONTENT STANDARD:
The learner demonstrates understanding of: contemporary Philippine literature as a
means of responding demands of the global village; various extended text types; lexical and
contextual cues; appropriate and polite oral language, stance, and behavior; and use of
imperatives, prepositions, verbs, and wh- questions.
B. PERFORMANCE STANDARD:
The learner transfers learning by: explaining the needs to be cooperative and responsible
in today’s global village; using appropriate strategies to comprehend extended text types;
using lexical and contextual clues to understand unfamiliar words and expressions; using
imperatives, prepositions, and appropriate and polite oral language, stance and behavior in
various information-sharing formats.

Ask students what comes to their mind when they heard of the word diplomat. Ask this
question. What do you think does a diplomat do in the service of his or her country?
Unlock unfamiliar words by asking students to figure out the meaning of the underlined
words using context clues in given sentences.
Unlocking Difficulties. Figure out the meaning of the underlined word by looking for
related phrases or definitions as context clues taken from the essays you had just read.

lady during the Philippine-Spanish war. Her memoir was published just last year.

As students read the selections, ask them to answer the guide questions within the text. Then
instruct them to answer the last column of the KWL chart.

Read about his or her life from his or her biography published online or from references in
the library. Complete the graphic organizer by noting details in a biography.

Post Reading
Let students share their research work.
Relate how the life of heroes should inspire the young to be civic-minded and patriotic.
Study the front page of a newspaper from the Spanish-American War in the Philippines.
Can you tell if this is fantasy or reality? Justify your answer for each. Look for information in
the library or online for evidence to support your claim. Then use the table provided in
identifying which events are fantasy and which are real.

Language and Grammar
Review the lesson about infinitives to the students. Ask students to explain the different
preposition and infinitives.
Present sentences that use gerunds. Have students identify the verbal in each sentence.
Have students answer the exercises in Grammar. Then check students answer.
In pairs, have students read and answer the questions. Remind them to use gerunds in
their responses. Call on students to share their answers. Suggest corrections to their
responses if needed.
Day 4
Language and Grammar
Review the rules on the use of gerunds. Then lead the students in doing the activity.
Assignment: On this day, students are now required to compose an essay. Let the class
brainstorm on a possible topic.
