Introduction

Tenses

Tenses are forms of verb that show the


time, continuance or completion of an
action or a state that is expressed in
connection with the moment at which
the statement is made about it.

Present Tense

Present tense is used to refer or indicate


something that occurs in the present.
Eg: It usually rains everyday here.
He gets up early every day.
 Simple present

The simple present tense is used, when an


action is happening right now, or when it
happens regularly.
Eg: She loves to play basketball.
It usually rains every day here.

 Present Continuous Tense

The present tense indicates that an action or


condition is happening now, and may
continue into the future.
Eg: I am eating fruit.
There are playing football.

 Present Perfect Tense


The present perfect tense is a tense, that is
used in present to indicate an action that has
taken place at some specific time.
Eg: We have played football on the ground.
He has written a letter to his friend.

 Present Perfect Continuous Tense

The present perfect continuous tense is the


tense of a verb that tells us when in time an
action or state is happening.
Eg: I have been studying for three years.
I have been watching tv since 7 pm.

Past Tense
The past tense refers to an event or an action
that has happen in the past.
 Simple Past

The simple past tense is used to talk about a


completed action in a time before now.
Eg: Sam cooked a tasty dinner yesterday.
I washed the dishes.

 Past Perfect Tense

The past perfect tense is a verb tense used to


talk about actions that were completed
before some point in the past.
Eg: We had played video games.
John had found a new job.

 Past Continuous Tense


The past continuous tense refers to a
continuing action or state, that was
happening at some point in the past.
Eg: He was eating food.
I was not writing a letter.

 Past Perfect Continuous Tense

The past perfect continuous tense refers a


verb tense that we use to express that an
action that began in the past and continued
Eg: We had been playing video games for five
hours.
She had been cooking food for two years.

Future Tense
Future tense is the future action that will
happen in the upcoming events.

 Simple Future
The simple future is verb tense that is used to
talk about things that haven’t happened yet.
Eg: I shall write an essay.
Ben will sing a good song.

 Future Continuous Tense


The future continuous tense is a verb tense
that indicates that something will occur in the
future and continue for an expected length of
time.
Eg: They will be cooking food at this time.
She will be doing a great job.

 Future Perfect Tense


The future perfect tense is used to for talking
about an action that will be completed
between now and some point in the future.
Eg: They will have left Japan.
He will have arrived.

 Future Perfect Continuous Tense

The future perfect continuous tense is a verb


tense that describes actions that will continue
up until a point in the future.
Eg: At 4’0 clock, we will have been waiting
you for one hour.
He will not have been reading a
newspaper tomorrow.
