Summative assessment - Integrated Sciences

Grade 7 (MYP – Year 2)

Candidate name: ____________________ Class/ Section: _____ Date: __________

Unit Title- You are what you eat!

Statement of Inquiry: We will need to change how we transform materials and energy
to achieve sustainable production and equitable distribution of food in the 21 st century.

Global Context: Globalisation and sustainability

Key Concept: Change Related Concepts: Energy, Transformation

Criteria assessed: Criteria C- Processing and Evaluating

Factors affecting the rate of activity of amylase enzyme.
You have been learning about the role of enzymes in the process of digestion.
Enzymes are core to every biochemical procedure. They catalyse the stepwise
reactions involving breakdown of nutrient molecules, Enzymes are capable of
catalysing reactions of natural origin and are synthesised by living cells only and are
also called biocatalysts. All enzymes are proteins, and they act on a specific
substrate. Substrate is the substance on which the enzyme acts.
There are certain factors that can affect the rate of enzyme activity:
a. Temperature of the reaction. b. pH of the reaction
c. Amount of enzyme c. Amount of substrate
Your task today is to Process and evaluate an experiment to test a factor that might
affect the rate of activity of amylase enzyme.
 Choose any one factor to be tested.
 Follow the procedure provided.
 correctly collect, organize, transform and present data in numerical and/ or visual
forms.
 accurately interpret data and describe results using correct scientific reasoning.
 discuss the validity of a hypothesis based on the outcome of a scientific
investigation.
 discuss the validity of the method based on the outcome of a scientific
investigation.
 describe improvements or extensions to the method that would benefit the
scientific investigation.
