MODULE 5- READING MEASUREMENTS ON VERNIER CALIPER IN DIFFERENT
LEAST COUNT (METRIC SYSTEM)

Finding the Least Count

The least count of an instrument is the smallest measurement that can be taken
accurately with it. The least count of meter scale is 1mm, and that of the ammeter
shown below is 2 ampere.
Measurement of length with a meter scale In daily life, meter the length is measured
with the help meter a scale. It is graduated in cm and mm such that the value of one
small division is 1 mm. Thus a meter scale can be used to measure a length accurately
up to 1 mm.

Formula in Finding the Least Count

1
LC = MS X --------
N
Where:
LC= least count
MS= least measurement on main scale
N= number of division on the Vernier scale

Example:
What is the least count if the number of division on the Vernier scale is 50 and the
least measurement on the main scale is 1.0 millimeter (mm.)

Following the formula shown above:

1
LC= 1 mm. X ------
50

= 0.02 mm.
READING 50- DIVISION VERNIER SCALE GRADUATED IN METRIC (O.O2mm. LC)

This type of vernier caliper is the most precise of all vernier caliper for the reason
that one millimeter was divided in 50 division and it shows on Vernier scale. The least
measurements of all Vernier calipers graduated in Metric is always ome millimeter
unlike in English system which differs in least measurements on the main scale.

READING 20- DIVISION VERNIER SCALE GRADUATED IN METRIC (0.05 MM. LC)

The principle of reading the measurement on Vernier caliper is always the same
as in other Vernier caliper. The difference is the number of division on the Vernier scale,
so if we divide the number of division on the Vernier scale which is 20 from the least
measurement on the main scale which is one millimeter, the least count must be five
hundredths of a millimeter (0.05 mm.)

READING 10- DIVISION VERNIER SCALE GRADUATED IN METRIC (0.10 MM. LC)

Vernier caliper least counts formula is calculated by dividing the smallest reading
of the main scale with the total number of divisions of the vernier scale. Least count of
vernier caliper is the difference between one smallest reading of the main scale and one
smallest reading of vernier scale which is 0.1 mm or 0.01 cm.
Vernier caliper is an instrument used to measure the length, diameter, radius, etc.
It can measure up to 1/10 of mm (or 0.1 mm 0.01 cm) which is called at least count of
Vernier caliper. It is used by the lathe mechanic for making metallic cylinders of different
sizes.
