ENGLISH
Language (i) Reading Read an unseen grade appropriate comprehension passage and answer questions with
varying degrees of challenge.
▪ Identify the purpose and/or main idea of the text
▪ Answer inferential questions based on the given text
▪ Identify meaning by predicting words and phrases in the given text
▪ Identify author’s use of devices to portray ideas and thoughts
▪ Connect the topic in the given text to personal thoughts/ opinions/ experiences
▪ Differentiate between facts, opinions, beliefs and prejudices
▪ Identify grammatical components in the given text (mentioned in the writing
section)
▪ Find a suitable replacement for grammatical components (eg; synonyms,
adjectives, words with a positive or a negative connotation or colloquial vs formal
written language etc.)
As per the purpose of writing, use the following grammatical components where required:
▪ different types of sentences, such as question, exclamation, statement, conditional
▪ direct/indirect speech
▪ present, past and/or future tense
▪ time and sequence vocabulary for cohesion and coherence (first, after that, in the
end etc.)
▪ phrasal verbs
▪ uncommon prefixes
▪ collocations
▪ write using complex punctuation (full stop, comma, colon, semi colon, question
mark, exclamation mark, speech/quotation marks, dash, hyphen, parenthesis and
apostrophes)
Speaking Students should be able to speak on any one of the given prompts for 2-3 minutes

▪ Extend ideas by supporting them with evidence and examples

▪ Identify, discuss or compare and contrast the main idea, theme, mood, tone and
feelings in poems
▪ Identify figurative devices, such as similes, metaphors, personification,
alliterations, hyperbole, onomatopoeia and symbolism
▪ Identify meter, word choice, chapter, stanza placement
(ii) Novel • Analytical, thematic and inferential questions
• Discuss the main idea, theme, tone, plot, setting
Hidden • Identify and explain the various conflicts (Character VS Self, Character VS
Figures Character, Character VS Nature, Character VS Society)
• Characterization/ Character sketch
• Compare and contrast two characters in terms of differences and similarities in
their characters
• Explain how author develops character voice(s) through actions, words, and plot
design
• Explain how a character responds in situations and what does that say about their
beliefs, assumptions, values, principles and thought process
• Explain how the characters undergo changes as the story takes turns and twists
• Identify and explain how author’s own feelings and thoughts may be seen
• Recognise connotations of words
• Relate character’s responses to personal experience
• Identify rhetorical devices used to argue, persuade, lead or sway (eg; Parallelism,
Hypophora, Repetition, Anti-thesis, Figurative Speech, Juxtaposition, Allusion,
Varied Sentence Length, Tricolon and Polysyndeton)

Factorization
- a2 - b2 = (a + b) (a – b)
Divide a polynomial (of degree up to 3) using factorization method only by:
- a monomial
- a binomial
Factorize the following types of expressions:
- a2 - b2
- a2 ± 2ab + b2
- ax2 + bxy + cy2 (By mid-term breaking)
Solving simultaneous linear equations (in two variables) using substitution and elimination methods
Solving quadratic equations using factorization and graphical methods
Algebraic Equations and Finding value of unknown variables
Inequalities Solve simple linear inequalities (and represent the solution on a number line) i.e.
- ax > b or cx < d
- ax + b < c
- ax + b > c
Area and perimeter of triangles and quadrilaterals (including parallelograms and trapeziums) - with consistent and inconsistent units
Area and Volume
Volume and surface area of cubes, cuboids, simple 3D right prisms, spheres, pyramids, cones - where the units are both consistent & inconsistent
Calculating gradients and y-intercepts from a given straight line equation of the form y = mx + c, as well as from the graph
Use of set theory to list number of elements in sample space and subsets
Meaning of the terms experiment, outcome, event, sample space, equally likely events, possible outcomes
Predict the outcomes of simple combined events with the help of:
Probability - sample space
- tree diagram
Calculate probability involving less than, greater than, at most, at least a particular number of single-event experiments
Word problems involving all of the above
