ECCENTRIC CONNECTION WITH BOLTS

(Bearing type)

Basic Types:
(a) Line of action of the eccentric load in the plane of the group of bolts
(b) Line of action of the eccentric load in the plane perpendicular to the
plane of group of bolts

Type: a Type: b
1
Line of action of the eccentric load in the plane of the
group of bolts

The joint is subjected to the equivalent

loadings:
(i) Axial load, P and
(ii) Moment = P.e

If there are n no. of bolts in the bracket

connection, direct shear force in a bolt,
F1 = P/n (acting in the vertical direction)

2
It is assumed that the bracket is rigid and therefore, the force in
the bolt due to moment will depend on its radial distance from the
centre of gravity and will act at right angles to the radial lines,

i.e.,
F2 ∞ r or F2= kr (where k is a constant)

It may be noted that the farthest bolt is subjected to the maximum force.

Design of Eccentric connection subjected to loading
in the same plane of bolt group

Let n be the number of bolts equally spaced at a

distance p. The force in a bolt is proportional to its
distance from the neutral axis. The maximum force
in the extreme bolt should not exceed the bolt
strength V.

Question 1. Design a bolted bracket connection to support an end reaction of 400 kN because of
the factored loads supported by the beam. The eccentricity of the end reaction is as shown in Figure.
The steel used is of grade Fe 410. Use bolts of grade 4.6. The thickness of bracket plate may be
taken as 10 mm. The column section is ISHB 150.

of the column flange. Design bolted joint connecting the Tee-flange with the column flange. Steel is of
grade Fe 410 and bolts of grade 4.6.
