LESSON

It was discussed in Module 1 of the Second Quarter the different types of bank
accounts and one of these types is the Bank check. Are you familiar with bank
checks? Do you know their features? Do you know how to fill out checks? Do you
know that checks are considered cash?

This module will further elaborate on what is a check, kinds of checks, its
parts, and its purpose.

What is a check?
• A check is a written, dated, and signed instrument directing the bank to pay
the bearer a specific sum of money to the bearer.
• It is a printed or written form, used to make payments from your bank account
instead of cash.
• It is a safer form of payment compared to bills and coins. Checks can be
deposited or cashed out.
• It is the bank form that the account holder fills out which instructs the bank
to pay the designated payee indicated on the check.
• A bank check is commonly accepted for payment and check can accommodate
large amounts.

❖ “Cheque” is the spelling used in some parts of the world, such as Canada and
England.
Remember:
Drawer – the one who signs the bank check ordering payment by the bank; the one
who writes the check.
Drawee – the bank on which the check is drawn; the bank that cashes the check.
Payee – the party to whom the payment is to be made; the party who receives the
payment.

What are the kinds of checks?

1. Personal Checks
• are checks issued by an individual, a single depositor, or joint account
holder.
• if the issuing account is a joint account, the personal check may have two
signatories.

2. Corporate Checks
• are checks issued by the company.

3. Manager’s Check (MC)

• issued by the bank on behalf of the client.
• an MC is needed if the payer or depositor does not have a checking account.
• it is guaranteed by the bank that the holder of the check has sufficient
funds deposited in their financial institution.

4. Cashier’s Check
• check issued by bank tellers. Like a Manager’s Check, a cashier’s check
ensures that the depositor has sufficient funds deposited in their bank.

5. Traveler’s Check
• checks are commonly used by people traveling in foreign countries.
• they are purchased for set amounts and can be used in purchasing goods
or services or be exchanged for cash.
• once widely used, traveler’s checks have been replaced by prepaid debit
cards and credit cards, and it can be difficult to find places or
establishments to accept them.

How to write a check?

2. Checks could be typewritten.
3. Check writers are used by some companies for security and safeguard.
