On the job training program helps students learn and be ready for their future field of work.

Since our internship will only took 200hrs, my friends and I decided to apply work with 2
settings, first is industrial and second is clinical. When we say Industrial and organizational (I/O)
psychologists study employee behavior in the workplace. They use psychological principles and
research methodologies to improve the whole workplace environment, such as performance,
communication, professional satisfaction, and safety. While in clinical setting it maintains
supervision notes and provides clinical supervision to a practicum student. Outreach workshops
and talks are provided to the college community. Utilizes our electronic recordkeeping system to
keep clinical paperwork up to date.
While searching a company to apply, we decided to visit some of the site, one of them is the
Binan Rehabilitation Center. After a long search we found a center wherein they focus on the
development of children who are diagnoses with mental illnesses. But they instruct us that the
starting date will be on June 26. That would make a problem to the given deadline, so we
decided to start first in industrial setting. I realized that finding and looking for a work is not
easy, it took time and patient to find the real one you really like. Making your own resume is too
challenging too since they will reflect on it. Being interviewed is one of my biggest fear because
I think I cannot handle the pressure but since we needed to do it, I overcome my fear. I applied in
three different companies, but I decided to settle in school registrar office since it is more
convenient for me. During my first week, I'm expecting that we are going to assist people since
registrar always assist students for their documents. But they instruct us to go in Audit office and
deliver Transcript of Records and documents to be signed by the head of Audit.
When I started working in registrar office, I learn that they manage people concerns
regarding their documents, enrollment forms, request letters. And when we say registrar office
we often think they are “masungit” I used this term because I hear it often to other students.
Some students are afraid to go inside the registrar office because of it. But then when I started to
work there I realized they are the busiest people, all the papers from different office will pass
through them. They need to see the record to make sure they gave the exact papers to the
student/parent. Finding documents that are from the year 2015 and below is not easy to find.
They need to look one by one since those documents are confidential and need to be given to the
right owner. So now I understand that some of them are grumpy or angry sometimes.
I observed that every paper that is given to us are confidential and should be kept in a safe
place. Every signature from different offices are important so is the time, you need to do the
assigned task as fast as you can because there are a lot of work to be finished by that day. I
remember one of my co intern misplaced one of the documents they are looking for it and they
can not find the paper, it took them an hour to find it and the evaluators are already tired. So,
when they find the paper they instructed us that we should be mindful of the papers they’ve
given to us since as I said it is confidential and important.
Working in Registrar office make me develop my social skills, I learn to communicate with
my colleagues and to the employees. We build a bond wherein we learn how to value and help
each other during the work hours. This activity necessitates being attentive in detail and agile to
finish on time and with few or no errors. Being patient too is needed when you work in this field
since you encounter different people everyday some of them are good and some are rude. Even
though it was considered light work, this simple chore increased some of our traits, but it would
become monotonous if I did it on a regular basis. I believe there are skills that I need to improve
more and need to practice when working in an office area.
Second setting is clinical, a learning and therapy center for kids who are diagnose with
mental illness. I am excited to experience handling kids since it is my field of choice to handle
cases like this in the future. I want to learn how they manage to be patient and firm when they
teach student especially those kids are special. During our first day I’m expecting we were only
going to play with them but no, teacher Giana instructed us to observed Doctor (Psychologist)
while diagnosing the kid. I am amazed of how she handles the situation; the Doctor is very
professional. I learn that words of affirmation are very important in kids, saying “thank you” had
a great impact to the kid. Those words will help them behave and follow you, I also clearly
understand now the importance of reward and punishment to kids it is very useful to use in
teaching kids.
Allowing myself to learn and understand this field is one of my goal in life knowing that
clinical field in psychology is not easy, it took time, patient, strength to adapt the environment. I
encounter being chosen by a kid I just met. He choses me over my co interns, I’m shock because
he follows my orders while some teacher can’t even touch him. This kid is one of my inspiration
to continue this field. I promise to myself not to show favoritism since I don’t want them to feel
that way. I want to value all the kids I handle so I can clearly recognize and remember them. By
showing our appreciation and love to them we make a bracelet they can wear.
There are routine modifications since I cannot remain up till late at night. I reduced my time
spent playing online games during the week to allow me to complete some vital tasks at home
and obtain enough rest. My body clock immediately alters since I am fatigued and doze off
quickly after returning home from the internship. Because I was too exhausted and spent to sleep
between 12:00-2:00am, I was generally already sleeping around 9:00pm. These things were
unfamiliar to me because my body is still adjusting and changing to accommodate the new
schedule.
I learn to manage my time during my internship days, I also learn to budget my money since
daily expenses is expensive. Appropriate dress is also important when you work in both settings,
you should show decency in wearing clothes specifically in clinical field. Being neat and clean
all the time is also a must.
I'm pleased my internship is over since I got to work in two different settings: industrial
and clinical. I learnt a lot and experienced new things that I never imagined experiencing or
learning. I am still in awe of myself since I know I succeeded in several areas throughout my
internship. Furthermore, some of the personnel are motivating and helpful for the future job I
intend to pursue. They made my internship as great as possible by sharing their expertise and
experiences with us. I can certainly state that after 1 month and 1 week of internship, I have
developed and succeeded in many areas. These abilities and expertise will be useful when I begin
working in the field of my choice in the future.
