Construction Notes – Setting Tolerances (Annex n. 7)
Before assembling and setting, the valve, the operator checks that the construction declaration
would be filled in correctly and clearly in all its essential parts.
See the construction declaration sample (Annex n. 8) to find the positions that must be always filled
in and checked by the operator; other filled parts will be checked anyway.
After having put together the different components necessary for assembling the valves, following
the available lists, the operator effects the prelirninary visual check. leaving the quality check should
be made during the assembling and setting phase.

7 ─ COMPONENTS PREPARATION
- Hydraulic test of the nozzle and of the body at the pressure value stated in the construction
certificate, carried out with suitable equipments (see documentation of the specific series).
- Drilling in order to fix the label on the body or on the valve bonnet(see documentation of the
specific series).
8 ─ ASSEMBLING INSTRUCTIONS
After assembling the operator fixes the set pressure and carries out the leakage test:
- he connects the valve inlet with the test bench and increases the pressure until the opening of the
valve; in case of discrepancy between the set pressure value and the one stated in the certificate,
the operator tighten the adjusting screw in order to adjust the set pressure;
- after having fixed the set pressure the operator checks the tightness at 90% of the set pressure;
minimum time and acceptable leakage according to API 527 - Seat tightness of Pressure Relief
Valves.
- if required on the Construction Declaration he checks the tightness between disc and nozzle
pressurising the secondary zone, no leakage permitted;
- if required on the Construction Declaration he checks the tightness between body and nozzle
pressurising the secondary zone, no leakage permitted;

Before installing the valve on the plant make sure that:
• the line fluid is indicated on the construction declaration or is compatible with the construction materials;
• the inlet piping in the valve are clean, impurities less, slag less etc. and eventually remove them.
• the inlet and discharge piping are dimensioned in such a way that they generate the minimum possible loss of
pressure.
The mounting of the valve on the plant has to be carried out tightening the lock nuts in a crossed and uniform way.
Once the valve has been installed on the plant make sure that:
• the discharge is not positioned in such a way to result dangerous for people or for instruments;
• the discharge is properly conveyed .
1.1 SETTING UP
Before shipment all the safety valves are hydrostatically tested and set at the setting pressure required by the Client.
Therefore regulation in loco should not be necessary.
The maximum setting error is less than 3% for pressure up to 21 bar, with a minimum of 0,2 bar; it is less than 0,7
bar up to 70 bar; it is less than 1% for pressure over 70 bar.
In case it should be necessary to modify the set pressure or the re-closure pressure of the valve (blowdown) , it
should be necessary proceed as follows:
1.1.1 setting regulation ( referring to drawing )
In order to carry out setting regulation of the valve it is necessary:
• remove the cap (11) and unloosen the lock nut (16);
• turn the adjusting screw (10) clockwise in case the set pressure should be increased;
• turn the adjusting screw (10) counter clockwise in case the pressure should be decreased.
The adjustment range of the spring setting is ± 5% of the set pressure indicated on the label of the valve.
Once the valve setting is regulated tighten the lock out (16) and re-screw the bonnet cap (11).
1.1.2 blowdown ring regulation (table 1)
In order to carry out the regulation of the blowdown ring execute the following operations:
• loosen the screw (8);
• raise the blowdown ring (5) by turning it counter-clockwise until touch the disc holder (3);
• withdraw the blowdown ring (5) by turning it clockwise, as indicated in table 1;
• tighten the screw (8) making sure it does not block the blowdown ring (5) but only that it prevents the blowdown
ring rotation.
If is required a more precise blowdown regulation, should be necessary carry out it with the valve installed on the
plant at full flow, taking into consideration that:
• reducing the number of withdrawing notches it is favoured the opening and it is delayed the re-closure;
• increasing the number of withdrawing notches it is delayed the full opening and it is favoured the re-closure.
2. DISASSEMBLING
In order to execute disassembling carry out progressively the following operations:
CAUTION : before disassembling the valve make sure that the plant on which it
is mounted is not “under pressure” and that no pressure inside
the valve itself has remained.
before disassembling the bonnet of the valve body make sure that the spring (13)
is totally released using the adjusting screw (10).

Pilot operated safety valves in inappropriate operating conditions could expose the plant to explosive
risk with injuries to people and damages to things.
PLEASE PAY ATTENTION TO THE INSTRUCTIONS OF THIS MANUAL AND FOLLOW THEM WITH
CONSCIENTIOUSNESS.
Correctness of given information such as application, chosen materials and chosen type of valve are
under user’s responsibility. Compatibility between the type of pilot operated safety valve and the
material of which it is made and the type of fluid, together with the operating and the processing
conditions, are at the user responsibility. The checks made by manufacturer are based on the user /
customer information.
Pilot operated safety valve maintenance shall be carried out by Technical personnel or by persons
who have suitable technical training and the necessary experience or who have been instructed by the
end-user of the product. For maintenance only the use of original spare parts supplied by manufacturer
is authorized. Please keep in contact with Technical for clarifications, doubts or other information.
Any installation, maintenance, adjustment, repair or test performed on Technical pilot operated safety
valve shall be done in accordance with the requirements of this document as well as applicable
National and International Codes and Standards.
3 APPLICABLE CODES
The following codes are applicable:
Please contact the manufacturer for info about the effects of this factor on device performance.
Safety valves could operate in fire conditions only if they are not directly wrapped by flames and if the
temperature limits are respected. Otherwise it is necessary the use of protection and cooling application
equipment (for example water application equipment).
For materials liable to corrosion and erosion, a minimum additional thickness of 1 mm shall be considered.
Any type of obstruction caused by polymerization, solidification, sedimentation or fluid freezing can
compromise the normal safety performance of the valve. Specific precaution shall be taken for avoiding this
kind of phenomena in the sensitive pressure pipes and in the internal orifices of the pilots.
The pilot operated safety-relief valves are exclusively intended as a protection of the systems from pressure
excesses due to alteration of the pressure itself.
The dynamic viscosity of the process fluid (liquids) must not exceed 0,8 Pa.s (800cP) both inside the main
valve and inside the pilot valve. The viscosity evaluation shall be done with regards to plant layout and it
shall take into account the position of the pilot operated safety valve compared to the position of the protected
vessel.
These valves must be used nor as control valves neither as blocking valves to isolate part of the system/plant.
The safety valves shall not be used as connections or transition components inside the pipes as well.
If all the prescriptions of this manual are completely respected with a particular care about “installation”, the
remaining risks during the operating of the valves are the following:
a) superficial temperature. If valves are used at a temperature different from ambient temperature, there could
be a risk relative to superficial temperature as safety valves cannot be insulated because they require
continuous visual inspections;
5 DEFINITIONS
In this manual following definitions are used:
BLOW-DOWN: difference between set up pressure and re-closing pressure which is normally defined as a
percentage of the set up pressure.
BUILT-UP BACKPRESSURE: static pressure which is found at the exit of the safety valve because of the efflux
through the safety valve and discharge pipes.
CERTIFICATED CAPACITY: it is the recommended capacity for the use of the safety valve, it is calculated
multiplying the theoretic capacity by the discharge coefficient Kd and by the reducing coefficient 0,9, or multiplying
the theoretic capacity by the certificated discharge coefficient Kdr.
COLD DIFFERENTIAL TEST PRESSURE: it is the set pressure on factory bench and could be different from set
pressure for effects due to operating temperature or operating back pressure.
DERATED DISCHARGE COEFFICIENT KDR: equal to the discharge coefficient Kd multiplied for a safety factor of
0.9.
DISCHARGE AREA A: area corresponding to the minimum diameter of the pipe between the entrance and the seat
used to calculate the theoretical capacity, without any deduction for possible obstructions.
DISCHARGE COEFFICIENT KD: it is the ratio between valve measured capacity and valve theoretic capacity.
FLOWING PILOT VALVE: process fluid runs through the flowing pilot valve during all main valve’s opening process
continuously.
FULL LIFT H0: declared maximum lift reachable by piston/disk and corresponding to the certified capacity.
LIFT: disk/piston lift in respect of the position when valve is closed.
NON-FLOWING PILOT VALVE: pilot valve which is influenced by a small discharge of process fluid only during the
opening and closing of the main valve and necessary to discharge the pressure inside the dome chamber.
MAIN VALVE: main valve of pilot operated safety valve is composed by body, nozzle, guide, cap and piston. As main
valve responds directly to signals received from the pilot, it determines the discharge capacity and therefore it has
more influence on the discharge coefficient.
DOME CHAMBER: it is the chamber located above the piston and delimited by piston, the guide and the cap in the
main valve. The pressurization of this chamber causes the valve opening/closing.
MODULATE ACTION PILOT VALVE: pilot valve whose action causes the main valve opening proportionally to the
overpressure.
POP ACTION PILOT VALVE: pilot valve whose action causes the main valve opening quickly and full lift achievement
with a little quantity of overpressure.
POSV: pilot operated safety valve, a safety valve controlled from a pilot is a self-actuated device composed by “a
main valve” connected to a “pilot valve”.
PILOT VALVE: is the control device of the main valve. It is sensitive to the process fluid pressure and determinates
all the functional features such as the opening pressure, the overpressure, the re-closing pressure, the modulating
action or “on-off” action.
RE-CLOSING PRESSURE: input pressure value necessary to the safety valve disk to re-establish the contact with
the seat and to stop the continuous discharge as determined by seeing or hearing.
ALLOWABLE OVERPRESSURE: pressure added to set pressure at which the safety valve shall be completely
open.
SET PRESSURE: predetermined pressure at which a pilot operated safety valve begins the lift.
SUPER IMPOSED BACKPRESSURE: static pressure that is found at the exit of the safety valve when it starts to
operate. It can be generated by other pressure device discharge.
TOTAL BACKPRESSURE PB: it is the combination of built-up and super imposed backpressure.
6 DESIGN
30000P series consists of full nozzle pilot operated safety valves for gas, liquid and mixed phase services with the
following features:
The main valve will open at set pressure but the lift will be proportional to the relieving capacity required. As process
pressure increases, the valve will open more and reach the full lift at 110% of set pressure.
The main valve uses the principle of back-loading the top of larger area of a differential area piston with inlet pressure
to hold the piston closed up to set pressure. When the pilot reaches the cracking pressure, equal to about 95% of
set pressure, the dome chamber will be progressively depressurized. At set pressure pilot operated safety valve will
open and piston lift will increase progressively permitting discharge of main valve.
As capacity relief of the system is satisfied, system pressure will begin to decrease. After that, the pilot will actuate
and direct system pressure to the dome of main valve to close it.
The set pressure range is 1 bar g up to 431 bar g but special solution beyond this range can be supplied if required.
The pilot supply line shall always conveyed on POSV outlet flange line.
Technical pilot operated safety valve with pop-action pilot uses the principle of pressurizing the larger top-area of a
differential area piston with inlet pressure in order to hold the piston closed up to set pressure.
At set pressure pilot operated safety valves relieves, fastly depressurizes the volume of the dome chamber causing
the piston to lift and the main valve to relieve. Pilot operated safety valve reaches full lift at 105% of set pressure.
When the pilot recloses, the volume of dome chamber is pressurized again and main valve is closed.
The pilot exhaust line shall always be vented to atmosphere.
PARAMETER DESCRIPTION

For each pilot valve corresponds a specific main valve, so that the same pilot valve cannot be used with another
main valve.
8 STORAGE
We recommend to leave the valves in their original package till it is necessary to keep them operating.
The valve shall be put in a building or in a space without dirty, humidity or other sources of contamination. If the pilot
valves are put out of the original package, take care about the cleanness of the pilot valve’s connections, of the inlet
and outlet flanges; it is suggested to close the connections with appropriate plugs.
Valves shall not be put in pile or in an open space under environmental agents before installation.
10 INSTALLATION
The most important reference for the correct valve installation is API 520 Part 2. Please take into account the
following prescriptions:
Valves operate in a strict range of pressure. In order to guarantee the correct operating the
installation shall be performed in accordance to sound engineering practice.
The pilot safety valves shall be always set up in vertical position.
The safety valves shall be installed in easily accessible location in order to make easy disassembly
and assembly and periodic maintenance operations.
Clean inlet pipeline and remove eventually objects inside the line before the POSV installation.
Remove plugs and protection from inlet/outlet piping and verify nozzle surface cleanness.
Verify that the gasket internal diameter is greater than the inner inlet flange diameter.
Before installation verify that installation plant conditions are consistent with nameplate data.
The maximum design pressure of the device protected by the safety valve should not be lower than
the valve set pressure as reported on nameplate. For multiple installation, additional safety valves
could have a set pressure above the design pressure.
Proceed with installation only after verifying the integrity of manufacturer seals.
The original Technical guarantee is not valid if the seals are removed or damaged.
The downstream piping must be shortest and linear as possible. The exit connection of a safety valve must be
connected to a pipe conveying in a safe area. The downstream piping shall have an internal diameter greater than
or equal to the valve inner diameter outlet flange.
Actual backpressure on system/plant shall be consistent with data reported on sizing sheet.
A safety valve’s discharge must be conveyed in a safe and protected area, otherwise it could be dangerous
for people and for the plant.
Using outlet piping with a inner diameter not consistent with the selected safety valve could generate
hazardous situations and danger for people and things.
Safety valve inlet piping (also curves and any isolating valves) shall be sized so that during fully open
discharge the total pressure drop in the line does not exceed 3% of valve set pressure. Greater pressure
drop could generate chattering and capacity reduction.
Reaction forces shall be considered in function of the set pressure, of fluid state and valve characteristics.
Inlet and outlet piping shall be tied in order to eliminate possible vibrations.
If it is not possible to reduce vibrations it will be necessary to increase the difference between the set pressure and
the operating pressure.
Thermal stresses are due to increase of temperature resulting from the flow of hot fluids during discharge,
to prolonged sun exposure or to heat radiated from nearby equipment. Even small temperature rise in the
discharge piping causes a change in length of the piping which could be transmitted to the valve and its inlet
piping. These stresses should be minimized by means of flexible supports or anchorages, or providing
expansion allowance.
Mechanical stresses are mainly due to the weight of the discharge piping which could be not properly
supported. Stresses caused by incorrect alignment of the valves piping must also be avoided.
In case of toxic or inflammable process medium, special care should be taken to ensure that the
drains are piped to a safe location and at atmospheric pressure.
Before maintenance any drain plug or vent plug shall be removed on the main valve or on the pilot
valve if there are flowing fluids in the piping.
10.8 TURBOLENCES
It is good practice to install valves as far as possible from sources of turbulences or pulsations. A recommended
minimum distance from discontinuity for valve installation is given below:
Modulation action pilot: the maximum operating pressure shall not exceed 95% of set pressure.
Pop action pilot: the maximum operating pressure shall not exceed 97% of set pressure.
in case of pulsating or fluctuating pressure, the differential pressure between set and operating pressure shall be
increased.
In case of operating pressure higher, please contact valve manufacturer
During the hydraulic test of the plant or of the device/vessel under pressure, the safety valves shall be
disassembled or intercepted. The use of a blind flange is suggested.
11 START-UP
After assembling the POSV on the device to protect, please pay attention that valve shall be closed. In order to keep
POSV closed, assure that there shall be pressure at the valve inlet to establish a differential force across the main
valve piston and load it in the closed position. Pressure shall pass through the pilot and pressurize the dome chamber
upon the piston, exerting force on the top of the piston.
On normal plant start-up the valve loads itself as pressure increases.
12 OPERATION
Technical POSV uses the principle of pressurizing the larger top-area of a differential area piston with inlet pressure
in order to hold the piston closed up to set pressure.
At crack pressure the pilot begins to discharge the pressure in the dome chamber, with a step-by-step action
(modulation action pilot) or with a very fast depressurizing (pop-action pilot).
At set pressure POSV begins to open.
At the declared overpressure POSV reaches full lift.
When the pilot pressurizes again the dome chamber, main valve closes. POSV reclosing pressure is higher than the
cracking pressure.
13 MAINTENANCE
Maintenance and revision operations can be performed with a variable frequency based on operating conditions,
process fluid and the frequency with which the valve discharges.
Normally, inspection frequency on the safety valves follows the same frequency of inspections on the pressure
equipment which they are designed to protect or to which they are connected. The plant manager must continuously
monitor the state of the valves, with particular attention to corrosion and erosion effects or other actions connected
to the nature of the fluid, which may over time compromise the structural stability or operation of the valve itself.
Elastomers have a working life which depends on the temperature and process data. Please contact the
manufacturer for the definition of a suitable frequency of maintenance operations.
The adjustable parts of safety valves are protected from tampering by using appropriate lead seals.
Removing these seals makes void the warranty contract and certifications, regarding the performance of the
components protected by the seals (calibration pressure set-screw, blowdown etc.).
Maintenance and/or repair operations must be carried out by skilled personnel, which have received
adequate training, according to the specifications and procedures of the manufacturer and also with respect
to the laws in force in the country where the valve is installed.
Check carefully all the disassembled parts and take care to the pressure containing parts status. Evaluate
possible corrosions or erosions which could compromise the correct operating and could be dangerous for
people and things.
Maintenance operation shall be done in accordance with the requirements stated in this manual and with the
provisions of the law of the country in which the valve is installed.
Check carefully all the disassembled parts and take care to the pressure containing parts status. Evaluate
possible corrosions or erosions which could compromise the correct operating and could be dangerous for
people and things.
Before executing valve maintenance take care the system on which the valve is mounted and be sure that
valve is depressurized and that in the presence of toxic, noxious or dangerous fluids, the valve was cleaned
and reclaimed.
Use always individual safe-protections tools, in particular hear protections and glasses.
Only use original spare parts supplied by manufacturer is permitted to guarantee CE conformity declaration,
warranty and valve certificate void.
While in the system, inspect the tightness of the seat Every valve opening
and of the disc or
every 6-months of operation.
Check tightness towards the outside of the system for Every 30 days.
counter-pressure.
According to Italian regulations. the safety valve must be overhauled within two years from installation if
used for hazardous fluids (Group 1) and within three years if used for other fluids (Group 2) independently
from the number of operations performed by the valve; if specific local laws exist, comply with them.
If no regulations exist, follow the guidance given in ORDINARY MAINTENANCE PLAN table reported
above.
The operation to be most frequently performed on field is a visible check of the general state of the safety valve.
It is recommended to equip each valve with a “service manual” where all maintenance operations will be noted
reporting also the frequency with which valve has opened during its service.
Full repair is performed by removing valve from the line. For maintenance a test bench with anchoring system for the
valve is required.
Technical recommends to perform maintenance of pilot operated safety valves in accordance with the following
procedures relative to the valve calibration and the fully assembled valve tests as they are described in the next
chapters. These procedures and scheduled maintenance, appropriate to the specific operating conditions,
guarantees, even for a long time, a proper valve functioning.
If the operating conditions of the pilot valve and / or maintenance required to prove beyond the possibility of your
maintenance, please contact manufacturer.
All the following maintenance operations shall be executed with pilot operated safety valve removed by the
line.
Sliding parts shall be correctly lubricated with a suitable grease. Please contact manufacturer for additional
information about grease data and applicability.

SPIKES SNUBBER
After removing the spikes snubber from inlet supply tubing and fittings, please proceed in accordance with the
following instruction for device disassembly.
remove the plugs (4), O-ring (3) and the cartridge (2) from spikes snubber body (1);
Take care to set the nozzle with the relative pitot tube correctly mounted. Pitot bore shall be directed in
bottom position.
A wrong pitot position could affect valve performance and safety level.
Sliding parts shall be correctly lubricated with a suitable grease. Please contact manufacturer for additional
information.
For the calibration of a pilot valve has to be used a small test bench as shown in the following figures.
The test fluid shall be air or nitrogen for pilot for gas/vapor service and water for pilot for liquid service.
The pilot set screw shall be screwed clockwise more than necessary.
Slowly increase the air supply to the set pressure marked on the plate. The two gauges "dome pressure gauge" and
"supply pressure gauge" will indicate the same pressure.
Unscrew counterclockwise the pilot set screw until you hear a leak from the exhaust pilot valve port.
Check the pressure gauges and regulate the pilot set screw until the dome pressure reaches 70% supply pressure.
This pressure is set pressure of POSV.
Regulate pilot set screw in order to put this pressure equal to main valve set pressure as reported on nameplate.
The pilot safety valve shall be completely assembled before proceeding with:
Set pressure test shall be performed on a suitable bench, with no leakage in the pressure system.
A good calibration depends on an efficient bench. It is necessary that the fluid and the piping of the bench
are clean, that the instruments of measure are certified as valid and that they have a right scale.
If there is not this condition the risk is to mistake the leakage with the valve opening.
POSV has a set pressure range for each pilot spring. Please contact manufacturer for additional info about this
matter.
This test must be carried out by slowly increasing the pressure to be sure that the main valve does not
perform a full rise. The pressure at the inlet must not exceed 110% of the calibration set pressure on the
nameplate.
This test shall be carried out by people with suitable qualification. If try to set up the valve not in accordance
with this Manual, the valve set pressure could be higher than what required and danger situations of
explosions and damages to people and things could be caused.
To test the set pressure on the bench it is essential that the tightness of the valve is good; if there is not this condition
the risk is to mistake the leakage with the valve opening.
In order to avoid to mistake the set pressure of the pilot operated safety valve with the cracking pressure of the pilot,
during this test the pilot exhaust shall be vented in atmosphere.
To perform the set pressure calibration, proceed with the following steps:
For calibration with steam as medium, valve should be open more than one time in order to minimize the temperature
gradient in the pilot inner components.
For calibration with water as medium, valve should be fully filled with water until the water level reach the outlet flange
profile in order to facilitate the set pressure evaluation (first steady stream).
No bench compensation for backpressure or temperature is required for pilot operated safety valve.
Set pressure tolerance: the one greater than +/- 3 % and +/- 0,15 bar.
For pilot operated safety valve the seat tightness test shall be performed at low and high pressure as described
below:
LIQUID 1 minute
The primary pressure, that pressurizes main valve inlet flange, nozzle, fitting/tubing and pilot connected with
the inlet flange.
The secondary pressure, that pressurizes the main valve outlet flange and fitting/tubing connected with the
outlet flange.
Field test accessory allow to verify POSV functionality in the field with the equipment under operating conditions.
The accessory consists essentially of a check valve in the supply line through which the test pressure can be supplied
to the pilot valve from an external source.
The test fluid is introduced only into the pilot. Take care that test fluid is compatible with the process fluid.
For testing, adjust gas bottle pressure to a value about of 110% of set pressure and gradually open the test valve A
and check the pressure on test pressure gauge until you can see or heard valve opening.
Take into account that field test accessory requires valve opening.
14 SERVICE LIFE
Technical provides full traceability of product documentation for a maximum of 30 years.
Valve service life strictly depends on operating conditions and maintenance plan.
Usually for not severe service the service life is estimated in 20 years.
Warranty period is, in any case, defined in contractual documents.

porta otturatore. In aggiunta a quanto sopra è disponibile
7a anche la versione con fori di lavaggio per consentire la puli-
zia della camera di espansione della valvola.
HEATING JACKET
For applications with high viscosity fluids or with fluids pro-
ne to crystallization, the heating jacket option is recommen-
7a ded. This option includes an insulating bellows to avoid the
blockage of the guide-disc holder coupling. In addition to the
foregoing, the option with washing holes to clean the expan-
sion chamber is available upon request.

Technical Srl has operated for years in the field of industrial automation and the construction of safety valves and
control automatisms for the extractive industry – the mining, petrochemical, chemical, food, canning steel and naval
sectors.
Our Design and Development process is capable of designing and constructing safety valves and control automatisms

When necessary, our technical consultants can lay the basis for the correct dimensioning of the safety valves and
automatisms to be installed and assist in making the correct choice.
The Production Process makes use of numerically controlled lathes and grinders as well as traditional machine tools.
Testing is carried out with cutting edge apparatus, in the presence of the customer if so requested.
All welds are performed by qualified welders by MIG, TIG processes or by Shielded Metal Arc Welding.
Where applicable, safety valves are constructed in accordance with EU Directive 97/23/EC (Pressure Equipment
Directive - PED) and bear the CE mark.
