Technical Description
Input Impedance

1 Simplified method to determine the input impedance

Each ENERCON wind energy converter (WEC) has a synchronous generator decoupled
from the power grid via a rectifier stage, a DC link and an inverter stage. Power is fed into
the grid via inverter modules with a nominal apparent power of 330 kVA each, which are
energised sequentially depending on active power output.
The inverter stage, together with the upstream DC link, rectifier stage and generator can
be considered as a current source with high impedance.
For the specific input circuit, an input impedance/resonance can be derived as follows, us-
ing the WEC's transformer and filter circuits.
The figure below shows this input circuit:

The equivalent circuit for the transformer impedance and the filter circuit of the inverter
modules can be represented as follows:

The table below shows the nominal values and parameters of the filter circuit:

Parameter Nominal value
L1 80 μH
R 0.5 Ω
L2 100 μH
C 200 μF

For the simplified transformer equivalent circuit, the following values can be assumed for
the low-voltage side of the transformer. These values are examples applying to trans-
formers uK = 6 %, irrespective of the transformer ratio.

The values LT and RT for the transformer sizes indicated in tab. 2, p. 5 are es-
timates. The point of contact for project-specific questions regarding determina-
tion of the input impedance is EW-Engineering Support / Technical Support at
ENERCON Project & Logistics Management (pm-ew-technical-support@ener-
con.de).

900 kVA 33.4 μH 2 mΩ
2500 kVA 12.1 μH 0.6 mΩ
2800 kVA 10.3 μH 0.5 mΩ
3500 kVA 8.6 μH 0.4 mΩ
3800 kVA 8.0 μH 0.4 mΩ
4200 kVA 7.2 μH 0.3 mΩ
4500 kVA 6.7 μH 0.3 mΩ

The impedance (Z) for the medium-voltage side can be calculated by means of the trans-
former ratio (tr).
2
ZMV = tr    ZLV

The E-126 EP4 and E-141 EP4 feed power into the medium-voltage grid via two
converter groups with two LV/MV transformers, each equipped with the same
number of inverter modules.
The input impedance (fig. 2, p. 4) is calculated with half of the installed inverter
modules (tab. 3, p. 6). The result is divided by the number of converter
groups.
