IV. PROCEDURES
A. Reviewing previous lesson or Do you still remember what matter is?
presenting the new lesson Can you explain this, MATTER is all around us.
B. Establishing a purpose for the The teacher will ask the learners to crumple, cut the paper into pieces.
lesson
Ask the learners: Can we still call that paper, paper?

Now, I am going to burn the paper. Can we still call this paper, paper?
(Insert the application of physical and chemical properties through its changes)
C. Presenting examples/instances of The properties of matter are the characteristics or attributes that help describe and distinguish
the new lesson different substances. These properties can be classified into two categories: physical
properties and chemical properties.
D. Discussing new concepts and Matter is anything that has mass and occupies space. Basically, all the materials and objects
practicing new skills #1 around us are considered examples of matter, hence, in order to better understand and study
them, they need to be grouped and classified according to their properties.
E. Discussing new concepts and Properties of matter refer to the characteristics that make matter distinct from one another.
practicing new skills #2 To understand this, let us compare the two sets of materials given below after performing the
indicated activity and answering the guide questions.

1. Which is harder between the rock and the chalk? Why?

______________________________________
 2. Which absorbs more water between the sponge and paper? Why?
______________________________________
With the wide variety of matter that we have around us, we can do activities which can help us
understand their properties or characteristics.

Comparisons done under the same condition is one way also to study properties of matter,
just like what we had with the chalk in comparison with the rock in dropping them within the
same level and soaking the sponge and paper in a basin with water for 10 seconds.
Below are examples of matter and we can differentiate their properties using the two major
classifications of matter namely the physical and chemical properties.

The eight (8) physical properties of matter are:

1. Hardness
A material has this property when it does not bend easily while resisting pressure and force.
Materials having this property such metals, wood, and rocks are commonly used to construct
buildings and bridges.
2. Brittleness
A material has this property when it gets broken, cracked or damaged because of high
pressure. Some examples of objects under this property are glass and porcelains.
3. Flexibility
A material has this property when it is capable of bending or being bent. Materials having this
property such plastic strings, thin metal wires, ropes are used to bind or tie things.
4. Elasticity
When a solid material has the ability to return to its original shape after being stretched, it is
considered to be elastic. Rubber band which is a polymer is a perfect example of this
property.
5. Conductivity
Another property of matter that makes a material conduct electricity and heat. Metals are the
best examples for this property.
6. Malleability
A material has this property when it has the ability to be hammered into flat sheets just like
gold, silver, iron and aluminum. Malleable materials can be turned into different shapes and
other desired designs.
7. Ductility It is the ability of the material to be drawn into thin wires. Metals that exhibit this
property are used in electrical wirings.
8. Porosity
Cloth and sponge are examples of porous materials because they have the ability to absorb
liquids.
Unlike physical properties which can be easily identified and observed, chemical properties
can only be observed and measured when a material has undergone change in its
composition or becomes another type of material. The materials given below illustrate the
chemical properties of matter.
F. Developing mastery Directions: Write True if the given sentence states a fact about physical properties of matter, if not
False.
(Leads to Formative Assessment 3) ________________1. Materials that should be used in constructing a hospital should be hard.
________________2. In order to absorb more liquid, you need to use a material that is brittle.
________________3. Chemical properties can be easily identified without the matter changing its
composition.
________________4. When a mug falls from the table and breaks into pieces, it is considered to be
porous.
________________5. A material that has compact molecule particles is less porous than those
materials which are slightly compact.
G. Finding practical applications of In what ways do the properties of matter influence our daily lives?
concepts and skills in daily living
H. Making generalizations and Why is it important for us to know the properties of matter?
abstractions about the lesson
