Protective Coatings on Metals

Painting

Electroplating
Anodising

Chrome Plating
Difference between Painting and Powder
coating?
Painting is a liquid material that you applied on the metal
surface while powder coating is a dry powder applied
electrostatically on any metal surface and then it is
heated.

Paint is less durable then Powder coating.

Paint gives you a thin finish while Powder coating gives you
a thick finish
Paint gives an uneven finish while powder coating gives an
even finish
Electroplating
► During the process, an electric current gets passed
through an electrolyte in which you’ve placed a
metal object. That electrolyte splits, which results in
some of its atoms being deposited onto the metal
object, resulting in the electroplating. For eg. if you’re
going to create a gold-plated part, the electrolyte in
question must be gold-based.

► Itis the process of coating one metal on another

metal surface using electricity to drive a chemical
reaction
How does Electroplating work
Electroplating is done by Cr, Ni, Sn, Zn, Cd

On Cu, Fe, Steel

Why do you need Electroplating
► Tomake the metal Shinier, Protect it from corrosion and to
increase its wear and tear.

► For eg.

► Jewelries are electroplated with silver or gold metal to make

it shinier and lustrous
► Carrims are electroplated to make it shinier and corrosion
resistant both
Chrome plating
►To electrically coat a metal with thin layer of
chromium layer is known as Chrome plating or
chromium plating.
Why do we need Chrome plating/electroplating
►To change the property of any metal, to make it more
durable
►To provide decoration,
►To provide corrosion resistance,
►To endure the temperature changes and weather
►To increase the surface hardness.
Chrome plating a component typically includes
these stages:

• Manual cleaning to remove all residual traces of dirt and

surface impurities
• Removing dirt and grease from the metal that needs to be
coated.
• Various pretreatments depending on the substrate
• Different substrates need different etching solutions, such
as hydrochloric, hydrofluoric, and sulfuric acids
• Application of plating current for the required time to attain
the desired thickness
Applications of Chrome Plating
►Automativeuse
►Arms and weapons
Nickel plating
►To electrically coat a metal with thin layer of
Nickel layer is known as Chrome plating or
chromium plating.
What is the difference between Nickel
Plating and Chrome Plating
► In terms of appearance:
► Chrome plating provides a shiny and smooth exterior, while Nickel
plating creates a glossier surface with a yellowish hue.
Anodizing
► Anodizing is an electrolytic process for producing thick oxide coatings,
usually on aluminium and its alloys. The oxide layer is used to give
improved surface resistance to wear and corrosion, or as a decorative
layer.

How is it done
► The process is done by immersing the aluminium into an acid electrolyte bath
and passing an electric current through the medium. A cathode is mounted
inside the anodizing tank; the aluminum acts as an anode so that oxygen ions
are released from the electrolyte to combine with the aluminum atoms at the
surface of the part anodized
► The anodized aluminum can be dyed prior to sealing to provide a colored
aluminum
Difference between Anodising &
Electroplating
► Thekey difference between electroplating and anodizing is
that electroplating is the process of coating one metal on
another metal surface whereas anodizing is the process of
increasing the thickness of the natural oxide layer on the
surface of the metal surfaces.
Galvanizing
► Galvanization or galvanization is the process of applying a
protective zinc coating to iron or steel, to prevent rusting.
► Different Techniques:
► The most common method is hot dip galvanizing, in which steel
sections are submerged in a bath of molten zinc.
► Electroplating– a common method that uses the item and zinc metal
as electrodes in an electrochemical cell
Galvanizing applications
► To galvanized sheet metal.
► Togalvanized house-hold items such as buckets, tubs and
other containers.
► To galvanized machine parts, tools, ships, tanks and wires.
► Metalpipes and wires are most popular galvanized items
which find application in industrial use as well as in articles
made for domestic use.
What is Powder Coating
► Itis the process of spraying paint on metal surface through
spraying and then heating it in the oven/furnace.

► In
powder coating, a free-flowing powder is applied to a
metal and then gets cured through a baking process.
