LESSON #1: CONSTRUCTIVIST METHOD OF LEARNING

TASKS:

1. Write a summary about the notes.

Constructivism is the theory that says learners construct knowledge rather

than just passively take in information. Its main focus is for learners to use their

previous knowledge as a foundation and build on it with new things that they

learn. It has three broad categories such as cognitive, social and radical.

Constructivism’s benefits are promoting student agency, develops

advanced skills such as critical thinking, analysis, evaluation and creation,

promotes diverse viewpoints and encourages students to reflect, evaluate their

work and identify intermediary skills to acquire based on their needs.

Constructivism promotes social and communication skills by creating a

classroom environment that emphasizes collaboration and exchange of ideas. Its

main principles are to seek teachers and value students’ points of view,

classroom activities challenge student assumptions, teachers pose problems of

relevance and teachers build lessons around big ideas.

The role of the teacher in Constructivist learning is adapt to the learner’s

needs and give them the freedom to construct knowledge for themselves while

on the other side, the role of the learner is to engage and interact with the world

around them, with peers, with authorities, and with educational materials.

2. Cite 3 important key learning points about Constructivist mode of learning.

1. Knowledge is constructed – every student begins their learning journey with

their preexisting knowledge and then continues to build their understanding.

2. Learning is a social activity – interacting with other students is very vital in

constructing knowledge. Group work, discussions, conversations and interactions

are all important to create understanding.

3. Learning is an active process – every student must actively engage in

discussions and activities in order to construct knowledge.

3. Present your own definition of Constructivist Learning.

For me, constructivist learning is a very important learning method that each

student can apply. Students can actively construct or make their own knowledge.

Learners can use their previous knowledge as a foundation and build on it with new

things that they learn. I think the motto or saying that “Experience is the Best Teacher”

was derived with this learning method. Learners have their own unique experiences

which will help them learn more or explore more.
