Class, I will group you into two. The right side
will be the group 1 and the left side will be the
group 2. Now, form a circle and eyes on me,
everyone. I’ll be showing jumbled letters on the
TV screen, and as a group, you need to arrange
the words correctly in your seats. The first group
to arrange it will earn additional point.

So, A modal verb is a type of auxiliary verb that
is used to indicate modality-that is likelihood,
ability, permission, possibility. And that would
be our lesson for today. It is all Modals and its
different functions.

Modal verbs are helping words or auxiliary


verbs that are used with main verbs. It gives
different moods or meaning to the main verbs or Ma’am, We often use modal verbs or other
action words. modal expressions when we want to express
an opinion.
When are modal verbs used? Anybody from the

CHARACTERISTICS OF MODAL VERB


1. They never change their form. That means
you cannot add "s" "ed" or "ing" or any
suffix after modals.
2. They are always followed by the base form
of the verb.
3. They are used to indicate the modality
which allow the speakers to express a mood
such as:
 Permission
 Ability
 Obligation
 Prohibition
 Lack of necessity
 Advice
 Possibility
 Probability

LIST OF MODAL VERBS


1. Can/Could
Can/could can use to express a fact, ability,
suggestion permission or request.

Example:
I can dance. The modal verb is Can.
 I can run fast. (Ability)

2. May/Might
We use may to express a formal permission
or request. And we use might to express a
possibility.

(Possibility)

3. Must/Must not (Mustn't)
We use must to express a strong command
and must not or need not for a strong
prohibition. You must not forget to eat you breakfast.
The modal verb is Must not.
Example:
 You must not forget to take your
medicine. (Strong Prohibition)
 We must stop when the traffic lights
turned red (Strong command)

4. Shall/Should and Oath to
 We use shall should and ought to, to
express a formal suggestion advice or
obligation.
 Shall is used when the speaker is sure to
receive a positive answer to the question.
We only use the subjects "I" or "we" in
this modals.
 Should on the other hand is used when
the speaker is unsure to receive a positive
answer to the question. Also used to give
advice.

Example: Should I eat that? The modal verb is should.


 Should I take you home? (Suggestion)
 You should wash your hands regularly.
(Advice)
 Tony shall finish his homework.
(Obligation)
 I ought to obey the law. (Formal

5. Will/Would
It is used to express future actions, express a
polite wish or request, order and prediction.

will be divided into 2 groups, each one of you
will pick 1 paper and have a mini role play about
your chosen scenario, but you need to be sure
that within you dialogues modals. I will give you
5 minutes to practice and 5 minutes to perform
for each group.

IV. GENERALIZATION

Modals are helping verbs that are used with


main verbs that gives different meaning to the
main verbs or action words.
