DOU C H I N G
Introduction
Vaginal douching involves washing the inside of the vagina with
a liquid solution. People may douche for personal hygiene,
aesthetic purposes, to prevent or treat infections, after
menstruation or sexual activity, or to avoid pregnancy. There has
been ongoing debate for over a century about the benefits and
risks of douching. While most medical professionals agree that
douching should be avoided during pregnancy, there is less
consensus on the use of douching for hygiene or to relieve
symptoms of vaginitis.

Previous studies have shown that douching can be harmful and

is linked to conditions such as pelvic inflammatory disease and
ectopic pregnancy, and it is generally discouraged by medical
experts. Despite this, douching remains a widely practiced
behavior

PURPOSE OF
VAGINAL DOUCHING
Motives for douching are many: to cleanse the vagina after menses or
before or after sexual intercourse, to prevent or ameliorate an odor, to
prevent or treat vaginal symptoms such as itching and discharge, and,
less commonly, to prevent pregnancy or sexually transmitted diseases.

Douching changes the normal balance of fluids in your vagina. This can
make you more likely to get a vaginal infection, such as bacterial
vaginosis (BV). It will not prevent pregnancy. Douching also may cause
problems during pregnancy.
