ACTIVITY 1: Table Completion. Identify the artists and the distinct characteristics of
each artwork. Write your answer in the table provided below.
A. RENAISSANCE ART
(1pt) Leonardo Da Vinci (2pts) The painting captures a crucial and climactic
moment. It is well known that Last Supper, one of the most
iconic Christian paintings deals with the last meal of Jesus
The Last Supper with his 12 apostles. The reactions and emotions on their
faces are what makes the painting even more captivating.
(1pt) Leonardo Da Vinci (2pts) The sensuous curves of the woman’s hair and
clothing, created through sfumato, are echoed in the
undulating imaginary valleys and rivers behind her. The
Mona Lisa blurred outlines, graceful figure, dramatic contrasts of light
and dark, and overall feeling of calm are characteristic of da
Vinci’s style.
(1pt) Guido Cagnacci (2pts) Her physical attributes correspond to the ideal of
beauty of the period: golden long hair, full lips and fleshy
body. One of the least ordinary depictions of Mary
Magdalene was made by the Baroque painter Guido
Cagnacci. He was known for the sensuality with which he
Mary Magdalene represented women.

B. BAROQUE ART
(1pt) Peter Paul Rubens (2pts) Prometheus Bond is depicted in light, and there is
a strong color contrast between him and the dark colors
around him. In particular, the eagle is painted fairly dark
and represents the evil force that he has attracted by
stealing fire from the Greek gods and giving it to the
Prometheus Bound humans.
(1pt) Diego Velazquez (2pts) Stylistically, Las Meninas is like the sum of the
best parts of all of Velazquez’s earlier paintings. Just like
his early bodegones, the paintings is marked for its
intense Caravaggesque chiaroscuro, a limited and
somber palette, a photo-like realism, and remarkably
loose, free and unrestrained brushstrokes.

world. The effective use of light and shadow and the
