1.2.1 Long Division Method


Example 10:

Determine the quotient and remainder when 2𝑥 3 − 7𝑥 2 − 9𝑥 + 38 is divided by (𝑥 − 3).

Example 11:

Determine the quotient and remainder when 2𝑥 4 − 𝑥 3 + 3𝑥 2 − 2 divided by (𝑥 − 2)(𝑥 + 3).

1.2.2 The Remainder Theorem

When a polynomial P(𝑥) is divided by (𝑥 − 𝑎), the remainder is P(𝑎)

Example 12:

Find the remainder when the polynomial P(𝑥) = 2𝑥 3 + 7𝑥 2 − 5𝑥 − 4 is divided by (𝑥 + 3).

Example 13:

Given that when the polynomial 𝑥 3 + 𝑎𝑥 2 − 4𝑥 − 1 is divided by 𝑥 + 2, the remainder is 3. Find the
value of the constant 𝑎.

Example 14:
The polynomial 𝑎𝑥 4 − 5𝑥 3 + 𝑏𝑥 2 − 7𝑥 + 1 leaves a remainder of −8 when it is divided by (𝑥 − 1), and

a remainder of 2
when divided by (2𝑥 + 1). Determine the values of 𝑎 and 𝑏.

Example 15:

Given 𝑃(𝑥) = 𝑥 4 − 𝑥 3 + 𝑎𝑥 2 + 𝑏𝑥 − 4 has a factor 𝑥 − 1. When 𝑃(𝑥) is divided by 𝑥 + 3, the


remainder is 68. Determine the values of 𝑎 and 𝑏.

1.2.3 The Factor Theorem

For a polynomial P(𝑥), (𝑥 − a) is a factor of P(𝑥) if and only if P(𝑎) = 0.

Example 16:

Show that 𝑥 − 1 is a factor of polynomial of 𝑥 3 − 2𝑥 2 − 5𝑥 + 6. Hence, factorise the polynomial


completely.

Example 17:

Find the values of 𝑝 and 𝑞 for which 2𝑥 + 1 and 𝑥 − 2 are factors of the polynomial

𝑥 3 + (𝑞 + 2)𝑥 2 − (𝑝 + 𝑞)𝑥 − 𝑝.

Example 18:

Show that 𝑥 + 1 is a factor of the polynomial 3𝑥 3 − 8𝑥 2 − 5𝑥 + 6 and factorise the expression


completely. Hence, solve 3(𝑥 + 2)3 − 8(𝑥 + 2)2 − 5𝑥 − 4 = 0.

Example 19:

Given that 𝑃(𝑥) = 2𝑥 3 + 𝑎𝑥 2 − 29𝑥 + 𝑏 has factors 𝑥 + 3 and 2𝑥 + 5.

(a) Find the values of 𝑎 and 𝑏.


(b) Hence, factorise 𝑃(𝑥) completely.
(c) Solve 𝑃(𝑥) < 0.

the value of 𝑎. With this value of 𝑎, find the three linear factors of 𝑓(𝑥).

9. Polynomials 𝑝(𝑥) and 𝑞(𝑥) are given by relationship 𝑞(𝑥) = 𝑝(𝑥)(𝑥 5 − 2𝑥 + 2).
(a) If 𝑥 − 2 is a factor of 𝑝(𝑥) − 5, find the remainder when 𝑞(𝑥) is divided by 𝑥 − 2.
