Medical Ready Reckoner for Bhavas

Bhavas play a very significant role in medical astrology. The 1st, 6th, 8th, and 12th houses are closely
related to diseases and the 2nd and 7th house being maraka bhavas are important to judge the health
of the native. Hence, these six houses are the most important in medical astrology.

The first bhava or Ascendant governs the entire body and health of the native. This house signifies
physical pain/comforts, bodily constitution, height, complexion, personality, temperament, and
health of the native.

The sixth house is Ripu bhava. It governs the enemies of the native. Since disease is the most
formidable enemy of human health, this house signifies the diseases a native may acquire during
his life time.

The eighth house governs longevity and hence also death. Death can occur due to disease, illness,
accident, old age etc. Hence, this bhava signifies fatal disease, causes of death, longevity of the
native. Age is an important factor while judging whether a disease is curable or incurable. Till a
person is alive there is always hope for a cure. But diseases that occur in the last stages of life, even
though not terminal in nature may prove to be incurable as life ends. Hence, the eight house also
signifies the curable or incurable nature of a disease.

The twelfth house represents Vyaya. It means ‘expense’ or ‘loss.’ Since all disease cause a loss of
physical health or life, this bhava is also studied in medical astrology.

The eight house and the eighth from eighth i.e., third house are considered aayu bhava or house of
longevity and the same is considered from these houses. The twelfth to any house represents loss
of that house, hence, twelfth to eighth and third i.e., seventh and second houses respectively are
seen for loss of longevity or in other words death. Theses houses are therefore called maraka bhavas
and we see death or death like suffering from these houses.

Hence, out of the 12 houses in a chart, the 1st, 6th, 8th, 12th, 2nd, and 7th houses are considered of prime
importance in medical astrology.

The part of the body in which a native suffers illness or injury also depends upon which drekkana
the lagna occupies. If the lagna occupies the first drekkana, the 12 houses represent body parts
starting from the head to the mouth. If the lagna occupies the second drekkana, the 12 houses
represent body parts starting from the throat up to the navel and in case of lagna occupying the
third drekkana the houses represent body parts starting from basti up to the foot.
