• Work-Kinetic Energy Theorem
1. Steve exerts a steady force of magnitude 210 N on a car as he pushes it at a
distance of 18 meters. The car also has a flat tire so to make the car straight, he
must push at an angle of 30° to the direction of motion. How much work does
Steve do? If he pushes the car with constant force of (160i – 40j) N and the
displacement is (14i +11j) m, how much work does Steve do in this case?
2. A farmer hitches her tractor to a sled loaded with firewood and pulls it a distance
of 20 m along level ground. The total weight of sled and load is 14,700 N. the
tractor exerts a constant force of 5000 N at an angle of 36.9° above the
horizontal. A 3500 N friction force opposes the sled’s motion. Find the work done
by each force acting on the sled and the total work done by all the forces.
5. A force of 60 N is required to hold a spring that has been stretched from its
natural length of 12 cm to 17 cm. How much work is done in stretching the spring
from 15 to 20 cm?
8. A block weighing 500-N is dropped from a height of 1.3 meters upon a spring
whose modulus is 20 N/mm. What velocity will the block have at the instant the
spring is deformed 100 mm?
9. A 2200-kg car starts its motion from rest at the top of a 20° incline. An average
friction force of 4000 N opposes the car coming down the incline so that the car’s
speed at the bottom of the path is 4.2 m/s. How much distance does the car
travel down along the incline?
