• Kinetic Energy
• Work-Kinetic Energy Theorem
1. Steve exerts a steady force of magnitude 210 N on a car as he pushes it at a
distance of 18 meters. The car also has a flat tire so to make the car straight, he
must push at an angle of 30° to the direction of motion. How much work does
Steve do? If he pushes the car with constant force of (160i – 40j) N and the
displacement is (14i +11j) m, how much work does Steve do in this case?

2. A farmer hitches her tractor to a sled loaded with firewood and pulls it a distance
of 20 m along level ground. The total weight of sled and load is 14,700 N. the
tractor exerts a constant force of 5000 N at an angle of 36.9° above the
horizontal. A 3500 N friction force opposes the sled’s motion. Find the work done
by each force acting on the sled and the total work done by all the forces.

3. A variable force (N) acting on an object is represented by the function f(x) = x 2 –

4x + 7 where x is the displacement in meters from the origin. How much work is
required to move the object from x=1 to x=4?
4. A force of 50 lbs. is required to hold a spring stretched 5 inches beyond its
natural length. How much work is required to stretch it from its natural length to
10 inches beyond its natural length in ft-lbs.

5. A force of 60 N is required to hold a spring that has been stretched from its
natural length of 12 cm to 17 cm. How much work is done in stretching the spring
from 15 to 20 cm?

6. An inverted circular cone with a height of 12 m and a radius of 5 m is filled with

water to a height of 9m. How much work is required to empty the tank by
pumping all of the water to the top of the tank?
7. A 6-kg block initially at rest is pulled to the right along a frictionless, horizontal
surface by a constant horizontal force of magnitude 12 N. Find the block’s speed
after it has moved through a horizontal distance of 3 meters.

8. A block weighing 500-N is dropped from a height of 1.3 meters upon a spring
whose modulus is 20 N/mm. What velocity will the block have at the instant the
spring is deformed 100 mm?

9. A 2200-kg car starts its motion from rest at the top of a 20° incline. An average
friction force of 4000 N opposes the car coming down the incline so that the car’s
speed at the bottom of the path is 4.2 m/s. How much distance does the car
travel down along the incline?
