MIDTERMS WEEK 2
• Curvilinear Motion in Two Dimensions
• Uniform Circular Motion
• Angular/Rotational Motion
1. A projectile on the ground launches a baseball so that it leaves the ground at
a speed of 37m/s at an angle of 53.1°.
a. Find the position (displacement) of the ball and its velocity at t = 2
seconds.
b. Find the time when the ball reaches the highest point of its flight.
c. Find the height of the projectile (maximum height that the ball can
reach).
d. Find the range of the projectile (the horizontal distance from the
starting point to the point the ball hits the ground).
2. A tennis player wins a match at a stadium and hits a ball into the stands at 30
m/s at an angle of 45° above the horizontal. On its way down, the ball is
caught by a spectator 10 m above the point where the ball was hit
a. Calculate the time it takes the tennis ball to reach the spectator.
b. What is the velocity of the ball at impact?
3. A motorcycle stunt rider rides off the edge of the cliff horizontally with a
velocity of 9 m/s. Find the motorcycle’s position, distance from the edge of the
cliff, and velocity 0.50 seconds after it leaves the edge of the cliff.

4. You throw a ball from your window 8 meters above the ground. When the ball
leaves your hand, it is moving at 10 m/s at angle of 20° below the horizontal.
How far horizontally from your window will the ball hit the ground? Ignore air
resistance.

5. Looking back at Problem # 3, how high (in feet) is the cliff if the time it takes
for the motorcycle to hit the ground is 0.955 seconds?
6. A sports car has a lateral acceleration (maximum normal acceleration the car
can sustain without skidding out of a curved path) of 0.96g. If the car’s
velocity is at a constant 40 m/s, what is the radius of the tightest unbanked
curve it can negotiate?

7. Passengers on a carnival ride move at a constant speed in a horizontal circle

of radius 5 meters, making a complete circle in 4 seconds. What is their
acceleration?

8. A deep-sea fisherman hooks a big fish that swims away from the boat, pulling
the fishing line from his fishing reel. The whole system is initially at rest, and
the fishing line unwinds from the reel at the radius of 4.5cm from its axis of
rotation. The reel is given an angular acceleration of 110 rad/s 2 for 2 seconds.
a. What is the final angular velocity of the reel after 2 seconds?
b. How many revolutions does the reel make?
c. The fisherman applies a brake to the spinning reel at 2 seconds, achieving
an angular acceleration of -300 rad/s2. How long does it take for the reel to
come to a stop?
9. You have finished watching a movie on Blu-Ray and the disc is slowing to a
stop. The disc’s angular velocity at t = 0 is 27.5 rad/s and its angular
acceleration is a constant -10.0 rad/s 2. A line PQ on the disc’s surface lies
along the +x axis at t = 0.
a. What is the disc’s angular velocity at t = 0.300 seconds?
b. What angle (in degrees) does the line PQ make with the +x axis at t =
0.300 seconds?
