Prep Guide For Mini OSCE
Remember, for fair and comprehensive assessment of portfolio skills, each student will have the
opportunity to be assessed for the nursing approach, knowledge, skills and interactions related to
patient scenario in Day 2 afternoon lab. Assessment will include observation of skills and review of
documentation.
Guidelines for Portfolio Assessment: Review the portfolio skills. When performing selected skills
keep in mind the following guidelines, in addition to specifics related to the skill you are performing:
Checking the doctor’s order related to the med or skill – knowledge component of meds
Your approach to the child and parent if present – apply principles of family centered care
Medical asepsis (handwashing)
Preparation of the scene (overbed table, adjust bed/crib, ensure safety & help if needed)
If performing med administration – 3 checks – 6 rights. Take the MAR to the bedside to ensure
correct child by checking the nameband to verify the child’s identity
Performing the skill competently - Rationale for what you are doing and precautions during skill
After skill completion: State: Disposal of equipment, handwashing, ensuring safety & comfort
of child
Documentation
You may want to develop your own checklist for the skills to review just prior portfolio
assessment
Meds: You need to clearly demonstrate calculations (no calculators), rights and checks.
Oral med administration for an infant or child
Inhalation Meds - Nebulizer, MDI, Spacer
Subcutaneous or IM Injections – How would you administer in developmentally
appropriate way – reconstitute, prepare and administer
Use of medical play in the situation
IV meds – reconstitute meds – prepare and administer
