OSCE SAMPLE 1: USING ISBAR TO COMMUNICATE WITH A TEAM MEMBER


Purpose of the station
The purpose of this station is to assess how you communicate a patient’s condition to a team
member. Underpinning the station is your competencies and patient safety.

Scenario/situation
The situation/scenario will differ from test to test. Details will be available inside at the station.

Examples include telephoning the doctor regarding the deteriorating condition of a patient or
carrying out a patient hand-over with a nurse.

You are required to:


1. Analyse the situation/scenario, taking into account all supporting documentation
2. Complete clearly and accurately in writing, each stage on the modified ISBAR
communication tool
3. Using the completed modified ISBAR communication tool, communicate with the team
member, providing a clear rationale for what needs to be done and the timeframe
involved
4. Effectively and assertively communicate in an accurate, clear effective and systematic
manner
5. Demonstrate a level of competence essential for safe practice

OSCE SAMPLE 2: INTRA-VENOUS INFUSION PROCEDURES
Purpose of the station
The purpose of this station is to assess how you prepare, prime and connect an intra-venous
infusion. Underpinning the station is your competencies and patient safety.
Scenario /situation
Mr Ward is prescribed an intravenous infusion via a peripheral cannula, which has already
been inserted.
You are required to:
Part 1: In the clinic-room area
• Outline Standard Precautions regarding the management of spillages of blood and
body fluids
• Explain to the assessor the reasons why each of the following might be prescribed:
a) Normal Saline; b) Hartman’s Solution; c) Dextrose
• Prepare the prescribed solution for gravity infusion
• Prime the intravenous administration set with infusion fluid
• Bring to the patient’s bedside

Part 2: At the bedside


• Carry out the necessary patient and environmental checks
• Explain the procedure to the patient
• Using the Visual Infusion Phlebitis (VIP) chart: a) assess the IV site; b) score the
findings; c) explain the action needed based on the score
• Scrub the Hub
• Connect the IVI to an intravenous cannula
• Safely dispose of the used IV giving-set

• Do not contaminate
• Explain what you are doing
• State when you would clean hands and how
• State when you would put on gloves and explain why
• Communicate in an accurate, clear and effective manner
• Demonstrate a level of competence essential for safe practice
