INTRODUCTORY CONCEPT
Remember the wood block ‘stacking game’ you played during your childhood
stage? If you do, then you must have been dealing with ‘geometry’ ever since! This Learning
Activity Sheet (LAS) will introduce you to the very foundation of geometry, the axiomatic
structure and its four main aspects, which will shape your mental processes to think logically and
to build sound reasoning.

LEARNING SKILLS FROM THE

MELCs
Illustrates the need from an axiomatic structure of a mathematical system in
general, and in geometry in particular: (a) undefined terms: (b) defined terms; (c) postulates;
and (d) theorems. (M8GE-IIIa-c-1)

SAMPLE

Was the activity fun? Did you find it challenging? The words you have encountered in
the activity are some of the mathematical concepts that you are going to learn as you study
axiomatic structure and its illustration.
An axiomatic structure, also known as axiomatic system, is composed of the
interrelatedness of these four main parts: (1) Undefined terms; (2) Defined terms; (3) Axioms or
Postulates; and (4) Theorems.
Imagine a four-step stair with broad
steps; the rule is you cannot advance to
the next if you do not step on the 1st. This
case is similar to the study of axiomatic
structure and its four components.

Instead of providing a precise definition for these terms, we resort to a description,

illustration, or demonstration.

. .

Defined terms or definitions are terms defined from the undefined terms in the
system.
SOME DEFINED TERMS

Triangle
2
These are statements that are considered true without proof or validation. The word "axiom"
can be used interchangeably with "postulate."
SOME AXIOMS

Statements proved to be true using postulates, definitions, other established theorems,

and logic.

From the proof above, you can take note that postulates are needed in proving a
theorem. Postulates are a combination of definitions/defined terms and undefined terms.
Therefore, these four terms are interconnected.

The figure on the right shows

the relationship of the four main
parts of axiomatic system.
