Designing Online Learning Experiences Guide

Module 1 Apply It: Setting Personal Goals
Choose a lesson to write or redesign from your own curriculum. (If you are not a classroom teacher, get creative. Work with a teacher to help
them, write an online professional development lesson, or create something to share with teachers). Next, select a primary goal for yourself as an
online or blended teacher. Optionally, you can write some additional reflection about the goal that you selected.

Name of digital lesson: Graphs of Rational Functions

School:Commonwealth High School
Twitter handle (if applicable):

YOUR PERSONAL GOAL FOR TRANSITIONING TO ONLINE LEARNING

❏/ I want to increase student agency by incorporating online learning.

❏/ I want to create opportunities for students to connect and collaborate.
❏/ I want to use online learning to personalize learning for my students.
❏/ I want to increase motivation and engagement through the use of online learning.
❏/ I want to improve the quality of my digital content design.
1
❏/ I want to use assessment data from online learning to drive my instructional decisions.

ADDITIONAL REFLECTION (OPTIONAL)

I want to develop strong time management skills of my students and to ensure that they allocate enough time for studying,
completing assignments, and participating in online discussions while also maintaining a healthy work-life balance.

2
Reflect on Key Questions (Optional)
As you close out work in Module 1, jot down some thoughts in response to the key questions, “How will you design your online learning
experiences? What elements are important for you and your students?,” and “What goals do you have for your own personal growth as you
teach in this online environment?”

I will strive to be adaptable and flexible in embracing new technologies and platforms that facilitate online learning. I want to make the most
of digital tools and resources to enhance my teaching strategies and deliver the lessons effectively.

Module 2 Apply It: Incorporating Student Agency

In this activity, you will select an element of student agency to add to your digital lesson and think about the specific design choices and structural
elements needed for implementation.

Step 1
Choose an element of student agency to add to your digital lesson.
❏/ Pace ❏ Path
❏ Time ❏ Place

3
Step 2

What specific choices do you want to give students during the lesson?

Example: I will provide student agency by allowing students to choose from a playlist of reading materials and videos. All materials will be aligned to the
same learning objectives and cover the same key concepts, but students will have autonomy in what resources they engage with in order to meet the same
outcomes.

I will provide student agency with learning materials in various formats, such as text, videos, interactive simulations, or audio recordings, to accommodate diverse learning
preferences.

Step 3

What elements of the lesson need to be structured and determined by the teacher with no choice?

Example: I will structure the learning for my students by requiring all students to engage with the playlist of materials within the same asynchronous
timeframe. Students will also be required to share a summary of what they have learned from their resources via an online discussion board.

I will structure giving students more flexibility in assignment deadlines to accommodate personal schedules or unforeseen circumstances. I will allow students to choose
supplementary materials or learning resources based on their preferred learning styles or difficulty levels.

4
Reflect on Key Questions (Optional)
As you close out work in Module 2, jot down some thoughts in response to the key questions, “What choices do students have in each digital
lesson?” and “How are you leveraging student voice in your digital classroom?”

I will set up discussion forums or chat rooms for students to engage in academic discussions, share ideas, and ask questions, promoting
collaborative learning.

Module 3 Apply It: Creating Your Digital Toolbox

In this activity, identify 3 - 5 digital tools you will need to adopt for you to effectively design your digital lesson.

Module 4 Apply It: Branding & Multimedia in Your Digital Lesson
As was mentioned in this module, part of ensuring high quality design of your digital lessons is thinking about consistency. In this activity,
consider the branding and multimedia elements of your digital lesson. Identify how you will create visual consistency using colors, fonts, and
navigation in the table below. Consider what types of multimedia, including videos, audio, and imagery, you will incorporate and create an
inventory with links in the table below.

Reflect on Key Questions (Optional)
As you close out work in Module 4, jot down some thoughts in response to the key questions, “What design decisions are you making to
intentionally create the optimal conditions for successful online learning?,” and “How can you mix text and multimedia in meaningful ways
in your online lessons?”

1. I will break down complex topics into smaller, manageable modules to enhance comprehension and retention.
2. I will ntroduce gamified elements, like badges, rewards, and progress tracking, to increase motivation and promote a sense of
accomplishment.
3. I will incorporate formative assessments throughout the course to reinforce learning and identify any knowledge gaps.
