Most useful words that are related to doctor’s work:
1. Vector - carrier of the bacteria, virus or protozoan that causes a specific disease
2. Idiopathic - the cause of the illness is unknown
3. Arrhythmia - abnormal heart rhythm
4. Triage - the process of assessing patients' severity of health condition in order to determine
who is in need of immediate medical attention
5. Thrombosis -a blood clot
6. Iatrogenic - illness is caused by medical intervention such as medical procedures and
medications
7. NPO - prohibition of ingesting either food
8. Intramuscular - route of drug administration where medication is directly injected into the
muscle
9. Distal - distant from the vertical axis of the body
10. Proximal - near the vertical axis of the body
11. Acute - sudden intense flare up of an illness or condition
12. Chronic- occurring for a long time
13. Angina pectoris - chest pain
14. Asystole/flat line - absence of heart rhythm which may indicate death
15. Bagging - manual respiration for a patient having trouble breathing that used a held bag
valve mask
16. Bradycardic - slow heart rate
17. Tachycardic - fast heart rate
18. Peripheral line/central line - very small plastic tubing directly inserted into a vein that
serves as a route for fluids and medication
19. Cyanotic - pale
20. Debridement - removal of devitalized tissue and foreign material
21. Defibrillation - applying electric shock to restore normal rhythm of the heart
22. Diaphoretic - excessive sweating
23. Differential diagnosis - the distinguishing of a particular disease or condition from others
that present similar clinical features
24. Diuretic - medication that increases urination
25. Dystocia - inability of the fetal head to pass through the hip bone during childbirth
26. Foley catheter - a medical object that aids un urination
27. Hemiparesis - weakness on one side of body
28. Hypovolemic shock - low blood pressure due to inadequate blood volume
29. Infarction - area of dead tissue due to lack of oxygen
30. Intubation - insertion of an endotracheal tube to assist and initiate breathing in a patient
who is respiratory distressed
31. Laparotomy - surgery involving opening the abdomen
32. Lumbar puncture - insertion of a needle at the spinal area in order to examine
cerebrospinal fluid
33. Melena - black stools due to blood
34. Myocardial infarction - heart attack
35. Necrotic - dead tissue
36. Diagnosis - the illness that is of primary consideration that causes the patient's symptoms
37. Venipuncture - drawing of blood from a vein

Common expressions in doctor’s profession:


1.Lung down - cessation of manual respiration in patients attach to mechanical ventilation
during cardiac surgery in order to deflate the lungs when the sternum is divided
2.Turn cardioplegia on - giving the heart diluted potassium chloride in order to momentarily
stop it from beating
3.Cutting - usually spoken by the main surgeon to indicate to colleagues and medical staff
inside the operating room that he is starting the operation
4.Count complete - indicates that counting of the medical instruments after operation has been
completed and well accounted.
5.Fully dilated - informs the attending or resident physician that a pregnant patient is 10cm
dilated and for transfer to the delivery room
6.Endorse the patient - to relay the patient's identifying information, medicAl history, laboratory
diagnostics and current or planned therapeutics to another medical professional
7.Flush the line - to irrigate the intravenous line w/ saline water to remove a clog that prevents
flow of medication
8.Are you scrubbing in? - to don sterile equipment in order to be involved in a surgical
procedure
9.Suture the wound- to apply a surgical thread to a gaping open wound in order to close it
10.Monitor vital signs - to monitor blood pressure, heart rate, respiratory rAte, temperature of
the patient.
11.Hook to oxygen - give oxygen inhalation through nasal cannula or mask
12.What are the scan findings? - indicates results of a radiographic procedure such as a ct or
mri scan
13.What is the patient's history? - detailed chronology of the patient's current condition which
started from onset of symptoms
14.Start induction - to give spinal anesthesia prior to operation
15.When was your last menstrual period? - asked in obstetric patients to determine
estimated date of delivery of the baby
16.What is the prognosis? -predicted outcome of an illness or current condition
17.Baby out- usually spoken by the medical personnel such as an obstetrician who catches a
baby recently delivered in order to note the time of delivery and to inform the pediatrician of the
delivery
18.Refer patient to internal medicine department- to refer a patient's medical condition to
another specialization for co management or transfer of service
19.Is the patient toxic?- usually asked by a medical personnel to another medical staff who
has physically examined the patient if it is in a severe condition
20.what is your impression? - usually asked by a physician to a colleague of his/her own
primary diagnosis
