1. What is CPD?

- Continuing Professional Development (CPD) refers to the ongoing process of learning


and development that professionals engage in throughout their careers. It involves a
structured approach to developing and enhancing professional competencies and
keeping up-to-date with the latest developments and trends in one's field.

CPD is an essential component of professional growth and can take many forms,
including attending workshops and training programs, participating in conferences,
taking courses and online modules, engaging in reflective practice, and seeking
feedback from colleagues and mentors. It can also involve engaging in self-directed
learning, such as reading journals and articles, watching webinars and videos, and
pursuing personal projects and interests.

The purpose of CPD is to ensure that professionals stay current with the latest trends
and developments in their field, maintain their competence and expertise, and continue
to provide high-quality services to their clients or customers. Many professional
organizations require their members to engage in CPD activities to maintain their
professional credentials and ensure their ongoing suitability for the role.

2. Define CPD program


- A Continuing Professional Development (CPD) program is a structured and planned
series of activities and initiatives designed to enable professionals to acquire and
maintain the skills, knowledge, and competencies necessary to succeed in their field of
work. A CPD program typically includes a range of learning activities, such as
workshops, seminars, courses, conferences, and online modules, as well as
opportunities for reflective practice, mentoring, and self-directed learning.

Additionally, CPD program may include a set of learning objectives, defined learning
outcomes, and an assessment or evaluation process to measure the effectiveness of the
program. The program may also provide participants with a certificate or other form of
recognition upon completion, which can be used as evidence of their ongoing
professional development to regulatory bodies, employers, and clients.

The CPD program is a valuable tool for professionals who wish to stay current and
relevant in their field and to maintain their professional competence and credibility over
time.

3. Goals of CPD Program for Nurses?

a. Maintaining and enhancing clinical competence


- CPD programs provide nurses with opportunities to learn new clinical skills and to
refresh and update their existing knowledge and competencies, enabling them to provide
safe and effective patient care.
b. Improving patient outcomes
- By staying up-to-date with the latest research and best practices, nurses can provide
better patient outcomes and improved quality of care.

c. Enhancing professional practice


- CPD programs can help nurses to develop their leadership, communication, and critical
thinking skills, enabling them to work more effectively as part of an interdisciplinary
healthcare team.

d. Meeting regulatory requirements


- In many countries, regulatory bodies require nurses to engage in ongoing professional
development to maintain their professional status and licenses.

e. Career Advancement
- By engaging in ongoing professional development, nurses can expand their career
opportunities and take on new roles and responsibilities within their organizations.

4. Nature of CPD program


a. Formal Learning
- Refers to educational arrangements such as curricular qualifications .and
teaching-learning requirements that take place in an educational and training
institutions recognized by relevant national authorities, and which lead for
granting diplomas and qualifications
b. Non-formal Learning
- Refers to learning that has been acquired in addition or alternatively to formal
learning, which may be structured and made more flexible according to
educational and training arrangements.
c. Informal Learning
- Refers to learning that occurs un daily life assessed, through the recognition,
validation and accreditation process, and which can contribute to a qualifications.
d. Self Directed Learning
- Refers to learning activities such as online training, local/international
seminars/non-degree courses, institutions/company-sponsored training
programs, and the like, which did not undergo CPD accreditation but may be
applied and awarded CPD units by the respective CPD council.
e. Online Learning Activities
- Refer to structured or unstructured learning initiatives, which make use of the
internet and other web-based information and communications technology
solutions:
f. Professional Work Experience
- Refers to any participation that professional gains while working in a specific
field.
5. Define CPD Council

- CPD council refers to a body created to promote, ensure, and implement the continuous
improvement of knowledge, skills, and competencies of professionals, in accordance
with the national, regional, and international standards of practice.

A CPD Council in each of the regulated professions shall be under the supervision of the
concerned PRB. Every CPD Council shall be composed of a chairperson and two (2)
members. The chairperson of the CPD Council shall be the member of the PRB so
chosen by the PRB concerned to sit in the CPD Council.

The powers, functions, and responsibilities of the CPD Council include:

a. Ensure the adequate and appropriate provision of CPD Programs for their
respective profession;

b. Evaluate and act on applications for accreditation of CPD Providers and their
CPD Programs;

c. Monitor and evaluate the implementation of the CPD Programs;

d. Assess and/or upgrade the criteria for the accreditation of CPD Providers and
their CPD Programs on a regular basis;

e. Develop mechanisms for the validation, accreditation, and recognition of self-


directed learning, prior/informal learning, online learning, and other learning
processes through professional work experience;

f. Conduct researches, studies, and benchmarking for international alignment of


the CPD Programs;

g. Issue operational guidelines, with the approval of the PRC and the PRB
concerned; and

h. Perform such other functions related or incidental to the implementation of the


CPD. According to the CPD law, the CPD is made a mandatory requirement in
the renewal of the PICs of all registered and licensed professionals under the
regulation of the PRC.
