States of matter
1. What do different ‘states’ refer to in science? Every substance in the world is made up of

matter/particles that can exist in a number of different forms called ‘states’.

2. What are the five states of matter?

 Solid

 Liquid

 Gas

 Plasma

 Bose-Einstein condensate

3. Match the properties to the different states of matter.

 Solid  Cannot be easily changed

 Take up a fixed amount of space
 Change to the shape of their container
 Cannot be poured
 Liquid
 Are not able to be compressed
 Spread out taking up all of the available space
 Cannot be easily kept in a container
 Can be compressed to take up a smaller amount of space
 Gas

4. Mass : The term used to describe the amount of matter in a substance regardless of what state it is

in (solid, liquid, gas).

5. Volume: The term is used to describe the amount of space that a substance takes up (solid, liquid,

gas).

6. What is the most commonly used unit of mass? Kilogram (kg)

7. What are the instruments used to measure mass? An electronic scale or a beam balance.

8. What unit is used to measure the volume of solids? Cubic metres (m3) or cubic centimetres

9. What states are classified as ‘fluids’ and why? A fluid is a substance that can flow; therefore all

liquids and gases are fluids because liquids can be poured, some gases can be poured and solids like

sand, salt and sugar can be poured because they are very little solids.

10. What unit is used to measure the volume of fluids? Millilitres (mL)
