The Appendicular Skeleton

LAB 7: THE PECTORAL GIRDLE AND UPPER EXTREMITIES

OBJECTIVES:
• To learn the names and functions of bones (and parts of bones) of the pectoral
girdle, the thorax, and upper extremities

MATERIALS:
• Articulated skeleton
• Disarticulated pectoral girdle
• Images on Canvas

Note: Continue to review directional terms and bone markings.

Part II: Articulations: Glenohumeral and Humeroulnar/Humeroradial

Most of the bones in the body connect to another bone. The connection points are called articulations or joints.
Articulations serve a few functions: 1) they help hold the bones together and 2) they allow for some flexibility
of a very rigid system. Articulations can be structurally identified as fibrous, cartilaginous, and synovial joints
and functionally classified by movement. The two joints that we will be studying are both synovial joints.

Instructions: Identify the following on the articulations in lab and complete the assignment pages. You
are responsible for all terms below.
.
I. Glenohumeral (shoulder) Joint (human and model)
Bones and parts:
Scapula:
• acromion, coracoid process, glenoid cavity, humerus
Humerus:
• head of the humerus, intertubercular groove, greater tubercle, lesser tubercle
• clavicle
coracohumeral ligament
coracoacromial ligament biceps tendon
acromioclavicular ligament glenohumeral ligament
coracoclavicular articular capsule
• conoid ligament SITS (rotator cuff muscles)
• trapezoid ligament

II. Humeroulnar/Humeroradial (elbow; human and model)

Bones and bone parts:
Humerus
• capitulum, trochlea, medial and lateral epicondyle, radial fossa, coronoid fossa, olecranon
fossa
Ulna
• coracoid process, radial notch, ulnar tuberosity, olecranon, ulnar tuberosity, trochlear notch
Radius
• head of the radius
