Part

Vocabulary (3 mins)
gym /dʒɪm/
a club where you can go to exercise and keep fit
健身俱乐部
e.g. He works in a sports center instructing people
in the use of the gym equipment.

instructor /ɪnˈstrʌktər/
a person whose job is to teach people a practical
skill

e.g. He worked as a dance instructor in London
before setting himself up in New York.
TI: Teach the pronunciations, definitions and example sentences of these words, then ask S to make sentences with them.

wonder /ˈwʌndər/
to ask yourself questions or express a wish to
know about something

Dialog (4 mins)
Role-play the dialog with your teacher twice, and learn the highlighted expressions by heart.

Patrick: Hey! My name is Patrick. I’m new to the gym.


Steve: Hey Patrick. I’m Steve. I’m the instructor here. Tell me, how can I help you?
Patrick : I was* wondering if you could suggest some exercises to reduce my love handles
(腰间赘肉).
Steve: Sure. This is a quite common problem among girls too.
Patrick : Yeah! I sit all day, and never really get a chance to exercise.
Steve: All right! You’ll need to do a lot of cardio to fix that.
* “I was wondering” is used instead of “I am wondering” in conversations, meaning “I was thinking” and “I want to know”.
TI: Take turns to play both characters. Emphasize and repeat the highlighted expressions.

Suppose you’re at the gym. Use the vocabulary and expressions you’ve learned in Part A to complete
the following conversation.
