All for the Spirit of DIY: Get to know the reason

behind Southern Space’s flamboyant single art

for Fairweather Friend

Southern Space seems to have a knack for photo manipulation and collages, and
they just don’t get tired of it. Their art direction has a face, and that is none other than
that of their own bassist, David Louise Ouano.
The band works hand in hand in realizing the art that goes with the sound, all for
the spirit of DIY. (in fact, the band has a public Pinterest board for art inspirations
somewhere in the annals of the interwebs, so go look that up if you have free time)
Deriving their art direction from contemporary shoegaze, dream pop, and punk rock
album art and inlay graphics, they believe in the matrimony of art and sound. “Single
and cover arts must be the visual representation of your sound,” Bryle says. “It breaks
barriers since it enables listeners to step into the visual realm of your craft. It is part and
parcel of the entire experience.” The lads are right. Remember the analog days? We’d
listen to the songs track after track while mindlessly staring at the cover art and inlays in
awe. Later, you realize you can’t listen to the songs anymore without having the art
impressed in your mind at the same time. Today, the new platform is trying to deprive
us of that experience, but there are still bands who attempt to recapture its essence.
