CONTROL OF HAZARDOUS SUBSTANCES IN AUTOMOTIVE

COMPONENETS AS PER E.E.C DIRECTIVE

(FOR OLD DESIGN INDIAN APPLICATIONS ONLY)

1.OBJECTIVES:

The objective of this standard is to define the acceptable concentration level of hazardous substances in
Shock Absorbers, Struts and Front forks and its components.

2. SCOPE:
2.1. This standard covers the control limits for four hazardous substances such as Cadmium,
Hex Chromium, Lead, and Mercury.
conditions.

2.2. The requirements for allowable threshold limits for these elements are derived
from ELV 2000/53/EC

3. REFERENCE:
3.1. End of life Vehicles Directives (ELV 2000/53/EC) July 2003.
3.2. Method to determine restricted elements in materials by X ray spectrometer.

4.2. E.E.C. European Economic community

5. DEFINITIONS:
5.1. Product:
Struts, Shock absorbers, Front fork and its sub assembly, components.
5.2. Substance:
The chemical items and their components in their natural condition or in the condition as a result of all
production processes.
5.3. Restricted substances:
Designated as restricted which may not be desirable in some applications above the declaration threshold
content limit.
These substances shall be supplied below the declaration threshold limit specified in this standard.
5.4. ELV directive:
End-of-life vehicle Directives makes sure that automobile materials or parts do not contain lead, mercury,
cadmium or hexavalent chromium above defined threshold limits ,so as the control the generation of
hazardous waste from automobile and to promote the reduction of waste through the reuse or recycling of
end-of-life vehicles or their parts.
