PRE-ASSESSMENT – INSTRUCTION MANUAL

• Students are not required to attempt all levels in the pre-assessment paper, they need to attempt only till the
level they are comfortable with.

• The assessment paper consists of two levels: - Foundational (Nursery, LKG & UKG) and Functional (1-8).

• Foundational level includes Nursery, LKG & UKG. It consists of 4 sections Listening, Speaking, Reading,
Writing (LSRW) and is scored out of 20 marks. Each section carries 5 marks each (4 x 5 = 20).

• Cut off scores:

➢ Below 10: Nursery


➢ 11 to 15: LKG
➢ 16 to 18: UKG
➢ 19 to 20: Move to Level 1

• Functional Level includes Level 1-8. There are 5 sections in the Functional Level question paper: - Listening,
Speaking, Reading, Writing and Grammar. (LSRWG) The listening, speaking and reading sections must be
done one on one (one teacher to one student) and writing and grammar sections should be done by the student
alone.

• Functional is scored out of 15 marks, each section carrying 3 marks each (5 x 3 = 15).

• Out of 15, a student must secure a minimum of 12 marks to pass that level.

• The assessor should go through the answer key and scoring rubrics in detail before starting the
assessment!
GENERAL INSTRUCTIONS

LISTENING:

• Read the text given, aloud. Read it with clarity and proper pronunciation. Read it thrice.
• Each question carries a certain mark. Evaluate according to the answer key/rubric.
• If the answer matches the word or sentence given in the answer key, allot full marks.
• If the student responds in the regional language but matches the answer key, allot full marks. Mention the
same in the ‘comments/observations’ section of the cover sheet.

SPEAKING:

• This section includes speaking and articulation.


• A topic/image will be given, and the students are expected to speak about it.
• Refer to the detailed rubrics provided in the following pages.

READING:
• This section tests the comprehension abilities of the students.
• The student will have to read the passage aloud to the teacher.
• Refer to the detailed rubrics provided in the following pages.

WRITING:
• This section tests the writing and creativity skills of the students.
• Refer to the detailed rubrics provided in the following pages.

GRAMMAR:

• Follow the answer key, and mark accordingly.
