Global Public mental health Unit Assignment Brief

The assignment is made up of two parts:

1. Identify a mental health issue from your home geographical area or a global setting. and use
500 words to critically reflect on health and wellbeing, and the economic impact of this issue in
the chosen locality (LO5)

2. Then, write a 2000-word essay on your chosen mental health issue discussing and critiquing in
what ways are UK national interventions, practice, and policies transferable into your local /
global setting (L0 1-4)

The essay will assess Learning outcomes 1 - 5 as set out below.

On successful completion of this Unit students will be able to:

Assignment guidance
To meet the learning outcomes in Table 1, you will need to include critical analysis and
evaluation, and show knowledge and understanding of key concepts in Public Mental Health.
The guidance below may help you to meet the learning outcomes for level 7 (Masters)
standard of academic work.

Part 1
This section should include a brief introduction to the chosen setting and the mental health
challenge. Say where this issue exists and briefly explain why it is a challenge for services to

meet people’s health needs. Use evidence to support these ideas. Then, use critical reflection
to explore how needs are met currently and where you think there are gaps in the service
coverage and why. This might be to do with lack of trained staff, lack of understanding of
mental health in communities, different beliefs about mental illness. You decide what the
issue is and use evidence to explain why it is an issue.

Part 2
Use your chosen issue for the 2000-word essay, and, with reference to current knowledge in
Uk public mental health, critically discuss how different practices and policies could be used
to tackle the problem in your chosen locality . You might for instance identify how de-
institutionalization of mental health services can enable more community-based
interventions, or inclusion of mental health practitioners in primary care settings provides MH
expertise to generic health workers. Your evidence is likely to cover several strategies that
address your chosen mental health challenge.
It is important that you DISCUSS and CRITIQUE the material you present rather than describe.
Also, all evidence must be cited and referenced using the Harvard referencing style
(https://libguides.mmu.ac.uk/refguide/mmuharvard).
In total, the word count of your assignment will be 2500 words, + or – 10%. Tables and other
supplementary material should be kept to a minimum. If included, please add these as
appendices. They will not be included in the word count.
