Elements of Fiction

Setting- the main backdrop and mood for a story, the place or type of
surroundings where something is positioned or where an event takes
place.

Plot-the main events of a play, novel, movie, or similar work, devised


and presented by the writer as an interrelated sequence. These events
relate to each other in a pattern or a sequence.

Theme- the underlying message, or the “big idea” in a story

Conflict- is a literary element that involves a struggle between two


opposing forces, usually a protagonist and an antagonist.

Characters- a person in a novel, play, or movie.

Point of View- is the mode of narration that an author employs to let


the readers “hear” and “see” what takes place in a story, poem, or
essay.
Symbolism- A figure of speech where an object, person, or situation
has another meaning other than its literal meaning.
