Who is the American Red Cross?

• Founded in 1859 in Switzerland


• Henry Dunant founded this association due to the Battle Of Solferino in Italy
• The troops had no medical support for all the injured soldiers , so
Dunant establish this organization for volunteers that could help assist
wounded soldiers.
• Later on, the group became known as the International Committee of the
Red Cross.
• 1864 about 12 countries sign the Geneva Convention which is for the
people that are sick, wounded soldiers, and the civilians who come help no
matter what nationality they are.
• The picture on the left we can see all the wounded soldiers on the floor

What does the American
Red Cross do now?
• Help people in catastrophic disasters
• Gives shelter, food, and provides,

disaster around the world have a reason
to have hope, to make sure our
communities are prepared for any
disasters, for everyone to be able to
access to lifesaving blood and blood
products, and during emergency to have
trained individuals to help save life’s
Organizational Structure
• The American Red Cross runs under a Congressional charter
• They are under the “instrument of the government” which carries out the duties and responsibilities of the
Geneva Convention
• The Federal Food & Drug administration (FDA) they monitor the the blood collection and storage programs
Who runs the
American Red
Cross?
• The president of the American Red Cross is
elected by a 50 member board of governors.
• Those members are volunteers and the
president draws a salary of more than
200,000 per yr.
• The President of the US is the chairperson of
the board of governors and he gets to appoint
eight of the board members
• 42 members are elected at an annual national
convention
• The board elect 12 of them and 30
delegates various fo Red Cross chapters
who attend the convention
• Approximately 1.2 million volunteers and
about 400,000 paid employees (mostly nurses)

American and the Caribbean
• Due to the fact of the constant threat of hurricanes, floods,
violence, droughts and landslides.
Who funds the
American Red Cross?
• The Red Cross doesn’t receive
any federal funding
• The Red Cross gets donated
money from companies,
organizations, universities, and
from individuals like us that
want to donated money.
• Big companies such as Walmart
and The USAA foundation

Fun Fact

• I personally used to work along side with


the American Red Cross, it was during
the time where the refugees came from
Afghanistan to Dona Ana. I could say this
organization was well organize and we
have a lot of donations that was given to
the refugees such as clothing, bathroom
essentials, and so much more.
• I even learn a little bit of Farsi!
• I couldn’t take pictures inside the camp
but here is one J I found online and one
I took leaving the camp!
