AI & ROBOT
NARRATIVE REPORT

GROUP 3 | TOPIC 4
CATALAN (reporter)
INTRODUCTION (AI)

- Artificial Intelligence (AI) is the intelligence of machines and “branch of computer

science that is concerned with the automation of intelligent behaviour” (Luger and
Stubblefield (1993)).
- Computers with the ability to mimic or duplicate the functions of the human
brain.

HISTORY OF AI

- 1941- first electronic computer

- 1949- first commercial, stored program computer
- 1950- AI started (Turing test)
- 1955- the birth of AI; Logic theorists, the first AI program; John McCarthy coined
the term “Artificial Intelligence”
- 1956- Dartmouth Summer Research Project on artificial Intelligence
- 1958- Lisp Language developed
- 1963- DARPA funds AI at MIT
- 1965- Moore’s law
- 1968- Microworld program, SHRDLU created
- 1980- first expert system introduced by Edward Feigenbaum
- 1982- Japan’s Fifth Generation Computer Project
- 1986- Navlab, the first autonomous car built by Carnegie Melon
- 1997- Deep Blue defeats Gary Kasparov in chess
- 1997- first publicly available speech recognition software developed by Dragon
Systems

ROBOTICS

- involves the design, construction, operation, and use of robots.

- its goal is to design machines that can help and assist humans

ROBOT

- Is a mechanical or virtual artificial agent

- Can be autonomous or semi-autonomous
- May convey a sense of intelligence or thought of its own
- Examples are industrial robots, medical operating robots, and patent assist robots

AI AND ROBOTS

PAGE 1
- AI gives robots a computer vision to navigate, sense and calculate their reaction
accordingly.
- Example: Sophia, the humanoid robot developed by Hanson Robotics on April
2015.

APPLICATIONS OF AI

- Medicine- to organize bed schedules, make a staff rotation, and provide medical
information - has also an application in fields of cardiology (CRG), neurology
(MRI), embryology (sonography), complex operations of internal organs, Image
guided surgery, image analysis and enhancement, etc.
- Music- music composition, performance, music theory, and digital sound
processing -development of music software programs which use AI to produce
music. Example: smart music
- Telecommunications- some company make use of heuristic search in the
management of their work place. - example: BT Group has deployed heuristic
search in a scheduling application that provides the work schedules of 20000
engineers.
- AI helps Telecommunications industries (e.g. Communication Service
Providers or CSP's) manage, optimize and maintain not only infrastructure,
but also costumers support operations
- Gaming- used to generate responsive, adaptive, or intelligent behaviors primarily
in non-player characters to human-like intelligence. Example: Tennis for Tow (the
first video game created by Willy Higginbotham)
- Banking- used AI to organize, invest stocks, manage properties, loan investigation,
ATM design, safe and fast banking, etc.

Some other Applications:

- plant layout
- marketing
- shipping
- help desk and assistance
- nuclear management
- satellite control
- network development

Advantages of AI:

PAGE 2
- More powerful and more useful computers
- New and improved interfaces
- Solving new problems
- Better handling of information
- Relieves information overload
- Conversion of information into knowledge

Disadvantages of AI:

- Increased costs
- Difficulty with software development- slow and expensive
- Few experienced programmers
- Few practical products have reached the market as yet

Future AI and Conclusion:

- Explosive growth of AI
- Future world may now depend only upon computers and become artificial.
- growth in positive sense (useful to society)
- growth in negative sense (harmful to society)
