CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

Student Work Experience /SWEP started long time ago, to empower and skilled
up Nigerian student to have both the theory and practical aspect of their field of
learning in their various school. To help them build their innovative, experience,
creative abilities and skills related to their fields of study by engaging in manual
labor. In addition to developing the logical thinking and reasoning that promotes
the practical application of acquired theoretical, knowledge in overcoming
technical challenges in student.

SAFETY PRECAUTIONS
The first thing that should come to mind as an engineer is safety. Safety is about
you obeying every rule inside or outside of laboratory to avoid loss, damage,
tragedy and any further accident.

1. Always wear safety gears such as Safety boot, belt, helmet and so on
2. All equipment in the workshop or laboratory must be serviced before use.
3. Do not work with defective tools or machine in the workshop.
4. Do not leave the sight of a working machine while it is still on.
5. Use the right tools for the right job to prevent damage/accident.
6. Keep every tools and equipment at the proper place after use.
7. Be aware of the exits point in the lab and the location of the kill switch in
the lab in case of fire outburst.
8. Always clamp your job firmly to the table jock or vice of the machine.

PERSONAL SAFETY
1. While you’re in your lab cloth, make sure it is button down
2. Always wear your safety boot to avoid sharp object or electric shocks
3. Do not put sharp objects in your pocket or play in the lab.
4. Wear approved eye protector.

CHAPTER TWO

Central Workshop/Founding

5
As a result of compacting sand around patterns, mold cavities and gate system
are created by either carving directly into the sand ore creating a 3D model from
the sand.

For steel foundry use, molds made of sand are relatively inexpensive and
sufficient refractory. A suitable bonding agent (usually clay) is mixed with the
addiction to it. To makes the aggregate suitable for molding and develop strength
and plasticity of the clay, the mixture is typically moistened water but sometimes
with other substances. Zinc oxide forms when the metal bucket pass through the
bath, and when it removed, oxygen can react.

There are five steps in these processes

1. We place a pattern in sand to create a mold

2. We incorporate the pattern and sand in a gating system. Remove the
pattern
3. We fill the mold cavity with molten metal.
4. We allow the metal to cool.
5. We break away the sand mold and remove the casting.

SAND CASTING PRACTICAL

There are two types of castings; the air set method, and the traditional casting.
The air set methods involve using dry sand bonded to materials other than clay
along with a fast curing adhesive, When this method is used, it is referred to as
Bake Casting, as it differs from “green sand casting that are cast with green
Natural Bonded (bank sand)” molding sand and synthetic bonded (late sand)
molding sand are two types of molding sands. The later is generally preferred to
its more consistent composition.

6
The sand mixture is packed around the pattern, creating a mold cavity with both
methods. If necessary, a temporary plug is placed in the sand near the pattern, so that
later on, it can be used to form a channel in which the casting fluid may be poured into
the mold cavity. The molds are generally formed by using a casting flask with two parts
known as the cope and drag. The sand mixture is then tamped down as it is added
around the pattern, thereby forming the mold. Finally, a final mold assembly is
sometimes vibrated in order to compact the sand and fill any unwanted voids in the
mold. After the pattern is removed, along with the channel plug, the mold cavity
remains. As soon as the casting liquid (usually molten metal) has solidified, the casting
will be released from the sand mold, and the casting will be detached from the mold. In
most cases, there is no mold release agent, and the mold is usually destroyed as a
result of removal.

Materials used in molding

1. Binders
2. Clay and water
3. Oil
4. Resin
5. Parting Compound
6. Pattern Substance

There are Six steps in this process:

i. We placed a pattern in sand to create a mold

ii. We incorporated the pattern and sand in a gating system.
iii. We removed the pattern.
iv. We filled the mold cavity with molten metal.
v. We allowed the metal to cool.
vi. We broke away the sand mold and remove the casting.

Production of Galvanized bucket

Among the many uses of galvanized metal buckets are gardening as well as
manufacturing because they are resistant to corrosion resulting from moisture
and exposure to the elements. The process of making these buckets generally
begins.

7
With creating their structure from metals such as aluminum, steel or iron,
and when it is removed, oxygen can react with it.

It should be noted that aluminum is already somewhat corrosion resistance

while galvanizing is not always necessary. Steel and iron, on the other
hand tend to rust and corrode easily, so galvanizing is usually the best
solution if moisture is going to get in touch with the bucket at all.

Galvanized Bucket Practical

This involves heating zinc until it is molten and then dipping the bucket into
the zinc bath; this zinc bath sometimes contains molten lead to help
maintaining the fluidity though this is not always the case. Upon the existing
zinc bath, the bucket is exposed to oxygen, causing zinc oxide to form. It is
through this process that the galvanized metal buckets are corrosion
resistant as well as having distinction to crystallized appearance. If the
bucket is to be welded again in the future, the coating will usually need to
removed, even though it will not usually interrupt the welding process. The
fumes from zinc can however be quite dangerous.

Material Used

PREPARATION OF TIMBER FOR CONTRUSTION WORKS

What is Timber?

The basic raw material for processing wood is tree before any wooden
material is used in engineering; it must undergo a series of processes
aimed at refining of wooden material so that it will be more durable and
stable. In wood processing, timbers are large squared length of wood used
to build houses and boats.

PROCESSESN OF TIMBER

There are three (3) stages to process Timber which includes;

i. Conversion of timber
ii. Wood Seasoning
iii. Wood preservation

FELLING OF TREES

“GROSS FELLING OF TREES” Felling of tree is the process of cutting

down of trees with a chain saw and sending them to saw mills to be cut and
converted into planks.

CONVERSION OF TIMBER

For industrial and commercial applications, wood conversion involves the

splitting of logs into desire sizes.

10
WOOD SEASONING

Wood seasoning involves the gradual removal of water from freshly

converted timber. All woods, regardless of hardness or softness, contain a
certain amount of moisture known as sap or moisture. It is possible for
newly converted woods that are not seasoned to warp, shrink and crack
because of this moisture.

TRANSFERING FILES IN COMPUTING SYSTEM USING STRAIGHT THROUGH
CABLE

FILE TRANSFER

It is possible to transfer files between two computer using USB flash drives external
hard drives, cloud storage services, email, WiFi, or Ethernet or LAN cables to transfer
files from one computer to another computer without a network, you can use Ethernet or
LAN cables.

Setting up a network between two PC’s

Using LAN or Ethernet cables to connect PCs. The best method of connecting to PCs
together without internet connection is the Ethernet or LAN cable, Once the connection
is establish, then files sharing is possible within the connected PCs.

Here are the steps used in connecting two or more PCs together.

1. Get and Ethernet cable to connect the PCs together

2. Plug each end of the Ethernet cable to one PC
3. Enable the sharing of files on both system under the Network and Sharing Center
4. At notification bar right click on the internet option, click Network and internet
settings
5. Then click Network and sharing center, Click on the active connection which is
the Ethernet
6. Click on Properties
7. Click on Internet Protocol Version 4(TCP/IP4)
8. Then click on properties again
9. Here we need to configure the IP address which the last number must be
different but the same gateway and subnet mask to differentiate one PC from
other.

GENERATION OF ELECTRICITY

Transformer
An electrical transformer transfer electrical energy between two electrical circuit or from
multiple circuits as a passive component. It is possible to use transformer to increase or
decrease AC voltage levels, such as Step-up or step-down transformer. Furthermore,
transformer can be used to isolate circuits from each other and to couple signal
processing stages.

Power Transfer

This is a network that consists of generators, distributor, and transmitter. Power

transfer system uses various forms of energy like (coal and diesel) to convert them into
electrical energy. Power system contains devices such as synchronous generator,
motors, transformers, circuit breakers, conductors, etc.

As the power transmits from the transmission line to the substations, the power stepped
down to the appropriate value to meet the needs of the consumers via the distribution of
transformer.

Types of wiring

I. Surface wiring
II. Conduit wiring
