Module 1: Properties of Gases

Gases are a state of matter characterized by their ability to fill any container they
are placed in, as they have no definite shape or volume. They consist of particles that
are in constant random motion and have high kinetic energy, allowing them to move
freely and quickly. Gases can be compressed, expanded, and easily transported through
pipes or containers. Examples of gases include oxygen, nitrogen, carbon dioxide, and
helium. It is contracted by changing the pressure or temperature. This property makes
them useful in many applications, such as in air conditioning systems, gas turbines,
and fuel cells.

2. What is gas?
A. It is 3 dimensions
B. It has no fixed shape or volume
C. It is the state in which matter maintains a fixed volume and shape, liquid is the

Module 2: Gas Laws

The behavior of gases under various situations, such as changes in

temperature, pressure, volume, and particle number, is described by a set of
fundamental principles known as the “Gas Laws”.

Gas laws are fundamental principles that describe the behavior of gases under
different conditions. These laws, which form the foundation of the field of gas
dynamics, enable scientists and engineers to predict and understand the behavior of
gases in a wide range of applications.

The gas laws are a group of laws that govern the behavior of gases by providing
relationships between the following:
• The volume occupied by the gas.
• The pressure exerted by a gas on the walls of its container.
• The absolute temperature of the gas.

Module 3: Kinetic Molecular Theory and Factors Affecting the Rate of

Chemical Reactions

KINETIC MOLECULAR THEORY

All matter has mass and volume, and it can have a variety of various qualities.
For solids and liquids, it is simple to study properties of matter like hardness, texture,
color, flexibility, malleability, and electrical conductivity that change from sample to
sample, but not for gases. This module will attempt to explain the behavior of extremely
small 'particles' outside of what your eyes can see in order to help you continue to
visualize what matter, in particular gases, is made of.

Since mass and volume cannot be accurately measured, we refer to gases as

having no fixed shape or size. This situation makes use of and may be applied to the
kinetic theory of gases. You have considered the three characteristics of gases—
pressure, volume, and temperature—in your earlier lessons. Understanding the physical
characteristics of gases at the molecular level will be greatly aided by these qualities as
well as the kinetic molecular theory of gases.

In this module, you will understand the properties of gases that distinguish them
from solids and liquids based on the Kinetic Molecular Theory.

Objective:
1. Explain the relationships of the properties of gases using the Kinetic Molecular
Theory

Activity 3: A Deeper Comprehension of Kinetic Molecular Theory

Directions: Below are characteristics of gas particles. Identify the characteristics of gas
particles that describes each KNT postulate found in the Table. Write the letter and the
word of the correct answer on a separate sheet of paper.
Characteristics of Gas Particles:
a. Attractions
b. Collisions
c. Energy
d. Motion
e. Size
KMT Postulate Characteristic

1. A gas is composed of large number of particles, either

atoms or molecules. They are so small compared to the
distance separating them that their own size can be
considered negligible. Compared to the total gas volume,
the particles occupy negligible volume. A considerable
empty space exists between particles.
2. Gas particles move randomly in straight line motion and
collide with each other and the container frequently. The
force of collisions of the gas particles with the walls of the
container causes pressure.
3. Collisions of gas molecules are perfectly elastic.

4. Gas particles exhibit almost negligible attractions and

repulsions for each other.
5. The average kinetic energy of gas molecules is directly
proportional to the absolute temperature (Kelvin).

Where do chemical reactions occur? One may see chemical reactions around us.
You observe a burning wood block, rusted iron, and a metal bridge corroding, and
rotting dried leaves. Some of these things happen so quickly, like when wood burns.
Others, like the decomposition of leaves, we can detect after a few weeks. It can take
some time before we see any changes in the appearance of the corroding metal bridge.
The speed at which a chemical reaction takes place can differ. Some reactions, like
burning, happen quickly, whereas others, like rusting, take time.

This module will provide you with information and simple activities that will help
you understand the reasons behind the rates of chemical reactions.

Objective:
1. Explain the different factors affecting the rate of chemical reactions.

Activity 1: Watch This!

then substantially answer the questions that follow. Use a separate sheet of paper for
your answers.

2. What happened when the surface area of solid reactants increases?
3. Enumerate all factors affecting the rate of chemical reactions that
mentioned in the video clip.

Activity 4 Analyze Me!

Direction: Read and understand the situational statement below. Identify the factors
affecting the chemical reactions being applied in the situations below.

1. Two beakers contain the same reactants. Beaker A is placed in a room at 25 C, while
beaker B is placed in a water bath at 50 C. Both reactions are monitored for the
formation of a product. Which beaker will show a faster rate of reaction, and why?

2. A chemist is investigating the effect of concentration. She performs the same reaction
multiple times using different concentrations of a reactant. How does the rate of vary
with increasing reactant of concentration?

3. A student is conducting an experiment to determine the effect of a catalyst on the

rate of reaction. They compare the rate of reaction in the presence and absence of a
catalyst. What differences in reaction rate are expected, and why?

4. A solid reactant is broken into two samples with different particle sizes. Sample A
consists of large chunks, while sample B is finely powdered. How does the rate of
reaction differ between the two samples, and what factors contribute to this difference?

Module Balancing and Types of Chemical Reactions

The production of heat and light, the formation of a precipitate, the
evolution of gas, a change in the material's color, or a change in temperature are
all typical effects of chemical reactions. We can see that the five senses are able
to easily observe these activities that are occurring when a chemical reaction is
occurring. One or more chemicals can change into one or more distinct
substances through a chemical reaction. In other terms, a chemical reaction is
the process by which a substance changed into a brand-new one with different
makeup.

Chemical equations are used to describe all chemical transformations. The

symbolic representation of a chemical reaction is a chemical equation. The
reactants and products are the two components of a chemical equation. The
chemical a reaction is known as reactants and are listed on the left side of the
chemical equation. The compounds that come from the reaction and are shown
on the right side of the chemical equation are called products. An arrow divides
the reactants and products

BALANCING CHEMICAL EQUATIONS

You initiate a chemical reaction each time you ignite a candle, bake a cake,
breathe, or even just think. Chemical reactions are happening all the time inside of you
and all around you, even though you might not always see them. Scientists can use and
manage chemical interactions to enhance our quality of life by comprehending how they
function. The way chemists describe and explain what happens in a chemical reaction
has evolved over time. Chemical equations are written to do this.

ACTIVITY 8: Let’s Balance!

Module 5: Naming and Writing Chemical Formulas

Chemistry is composed of chemical names and formulas, which enables
scientists to precisely discuss the myriad chemicals that make up our universe. Whether
you're an aspiring scientist, a student looking to ace your chemistry exams, or just
someone who is interested in the structure and makeup of matter, this module will
provide you the knowledge and abilities you need to confidently understand and produce
chemical names and formulas.

Compounds can frequently seem highly unusual to us due to our lack of

knowledge or understanding, especially if their chemical name and formula are used to
describe them. Food, medication, and other product labels always include the chemical
name and formula. However, learning the skill of writing the chemical name and formula
of different compounds is something that everyone must do regardless of whether they
work in a field linked to chemistry or not.

In this module, we will be exploring the art of accurately naming and writing
chemical names and formulas.

OBJECTIVES:
1. Name compounds given their chemical formulas and write the chemical formula given
the chemical name of the compounds.
2. Represent compounds using chemical formulas and models.
