Tips for craftin
I will recommend you some common material that you can use for cosplay
creations. However, feel free to use any material, whether its cardboard, foam
or even wood etc. The art of crafting is all about innovation and the way you
can create your ideal project, there is more than one way to approach it !
My patterns & blueprints are here to give you a head start in helping you
build your props and accessories with the right proportions and details.
If you need more information for some techniques : I suggest checking out
my more advanced tutorials on sohanblazeca.com.

1/ Eva foa
EVA foam is an affordable and popular material for cosplay. It can be
thermoformed easily with a heat gun, sanded with a Dremel and glued together
with contact glue (Neoprene).
EVA foam can be found in different density and thickness, I personally have a
preferred utilisation for each of them :

• 2 mm EVA foam : To add details ( Level variation, flat details … ) or to

use as a base for 3D volume patterns ( e.g. Horns )
• 3 mm EVA foam : Same as 2mm
• 5 mm EVA foam : A good base for most armour and thin props ( e.g. :
arm armour & small swords )
• 10mm EVA foam : A good base for thicker props
• > 1cm EVA foam : Perfect for huge props so you don’t have to glue
multiple 1cm EVA sheets together

• Low density EVA foam : I use it for most of my props & creations. From
the base to the details
• High density EVA foam : I use it for details or parts that need to be sand
precisely or to be a little less flexible than the low density foam

The difference between these two foam types is hard to explain. If you are
crafting your first props, low density is perfect. You can try the high
density type later to upgrade your prop making skills. It is not necessary to
have both types to create props.

2/ Worbla & termoplatics
Worbla is a material that can be thermoformed with a heat gun and also stick
to itself. Once it has cooled off, it will harden and stay in the new shape. The
main benefit of using a worbla sheet is that it does not have any significant
wastage. Little scraps of worbla can be reheated and reused.
For my own props and accessories, I usually use Worbla as a way to harden
or solidify my creations. In the past, I’ve attempted to use wrapping eva foam
creations with worbla, but I think this is overkill and a big waste of resources.
Worbla is a pretty expensive material and covering EVA foam armors and
accessories make it heavy and uncomfortable.
Here is a non-exhaustive list of some kinds of worbla you can find and use :

• Worbla finest art : Is the famous beige thermoplastic. It has a rough

texture that will have to be hand sanded
• Worbla black art : This worbla is a little bit more expensive than the
finest art one, but it is smooth so you don’t need to sand it ! If you need
to use worbla, I would recommend this one for a few more bucks it is
worth the price
• Worbla crystal art : This one is perfect to build little solid sculptures and
details ! It also lets the light pass through it as it is kinda transparent

3/ Foa clay
Foam clay is a clay made out of foam. You can use it to sculpt, to add details
and to fill imperfections. Once dry you can sand it like EVA foam. It is light
weight and is really easy to work with.

4/ Support & Stucture

With EVA foam weapons, it is very important to have some sort of structure
within it, or else it will be quite floppy depending on the foam you use. A good
way of reinforcing the core of the weapons is to use a PVC pipe, which can be
heated with a heat gun to form interesting shapes as reinforcement. You can
also use wood or plastic, whether it is a random broomstick, or a wooden
dowel bought from a hardware store. Personally, my preferences always
depends on the type of projects I’m creating, so I always like to keep my mind
open in what I plan to use. When building your props, it is very important to
keep in mind the location and the rules that your local con has set. By knowing
what the limitations are, you will be prepared to adapt and overcome any
problems that come your way.

4/ Undercoat
If you are using EVA foam or worbla you HAVE to apply an undercoat before
you paint it. This step might be confusing as you have certainly heard of many
products that can be used to undercoat. I will detail the most known ones and
their specificities :
Wood glue Perfect to begin with as it is affordable - Perfect for Worbla
and easy to find ! It is slightly flexible - Can be used on EVA
but it may crack on EVA foam ( When foam but not the best
worn or stored )
Gesso Affordable and easy to find. It is a - Only for Worbla
paste that will turn hard once dry. You
have to sand it to get a smooth finish.
★ Flexpaint Is harder to find but is worth it. You - Perfect for EVA foam
My favourite can use it in thick layers or dilute it when mixed with
with water. It will be 100% elastic and water
if an EVA piece crack due to use or - Good for Worbla in
storage you can heat it (heat gun) a thicker layers but this
little bit to remove the cracks.. is not the optimal
I recommend using the transparent one choice
so you can mix it with pigment and
paint, and do the priming and the
3/ Foa clay colour base at the same time.

Plastidip Is an elastic spray undercoat. It is easy - Perfect if you have a

and fast to apply but is expensive. piece with a lot of thin
It will NOT cover imperfections, your details to prime
piece has to have the texture and finish - EVA foam or Worbla

4/ Stucture
you want already

4/ Paint & Vanish

For the paint, you can’t use gouache or watercolour paints. You have to use
acrylic paints as it is a plastic based paint.
For the varnish I would recommend any spray varnish if you used wood glue
or Gesso as an undercoat. If you used Flexipaint, use the Flexpaint special
varnish (Can be applied with a brush or with an airbrush) so it remains elastic.
If you used Plastidip, use Plastidip varnish.
How to ue my paterns
1/ Open te pdf
With your purchase you may have noticed multiple documents in the
compressed file : An ENG/FR version of this pattern and a 3rd document.
Open this 3rd document with a PDF reader (I will use Adobe Acrobat reader )

2/ Prnt optios
Click on the print icon and make sure to be in poster mode so you can
change the scale. You can see on the preview how it will split. On top of this
preview there are the measurements.. You can change the orientation of the
paper (Portrait / Landscape ), add cut marks/overlap ect.
Depending on the options you selected, the measurements might include
some blank space (as you can see here on top and bottom of the sword). So
make sure to add extra % to include them if needed.

3/ Keep te shae
Do NOT directly tape the pages
together ! There is a blank margin all
over each page, you pattern will be
wrong if you don’t cut them out.
You will need to trace a line corner
to corner like you can see in red on
the picture here.
Then you can cut along the line and
tape them together.
Once your whole pattern is
assembled, you can cut the main
shape and start crafting.

I hope you will have fun crafting !

As I said before, make sure to tag me
in your WIPs and finished creations. I
really would love to see them ! And

4/ Tips :
Once your pattern is cut into one or several parts, do not throw it away! Put
all the pieces in a transparent sheet in a folder.
You can use the text with the name of the weapon as a label on the front to
help you find it easily.
