SELECTION ANNOTATION

THREE WORDS OF STRENGTH

by Friedrich Von Schiller
There are three lessons I would write
Three words as with a burning pen,
In tracings of enternal light
Upon the hearts of man.
Have hope. Through clouds environ
round
And gladness hides her face in scorn,
Put up the shadow thy brow
No night but hath its morn.
Have faith, Where’er thy bark is driven ,
The calm’s disport the tempest’s mirth
Know this: God rules the hosts of heaven
The inhabitants of earth.
Have love, Not love alone for one
But man, as man ty brothers call.
And scatter like a circling sun,
Thy charities on all

What I Can Do
You are a student contributor to a quarterly folio for school students. This quarter’s issue
seeks to spotlight book reviews from high school students. As such, you are to write a critique
that evaluates a poem of your choice according to how it demonstrates values of humanism
through its elements and theme.
In order to be of the quality and depth expected by the folio, the critique must have the
following features:
1. The critique must cover and discuss the poetic devices of the poem using the aesthetic
approach.
2. The critique itself must use figurative language to vividly express or support your points.
3. The language of the critique must feature effective coordination, and avoid sringy
sentences.
