2 The particle model

Support: Demonstrating Brownian motion

Tasks
2. Copy and complete the sentences, choosing the correct bold words, to describe what
Brownian motion is.
Brownian motion is the regular/random (in all directions) movement of
pieces/atoms of solid suspended in a liquid or gas. It occurs because the
invisible/visible particles of the liquid or gas bump into/combine with the
invisible/visible particles of the solid. This makes the suspended pieces of solid move
randomly/regularly.

4. Match the sentence starter to the correct ending. This will create a summary explaining
why Brownian motion provides evidence for the particle model.

Starter Endings
Brownian motion provides evidence that … … pollen grains are all particles that
are alive.
… liquids and gases are made up of
small, invisible particles that are in
constant motion.
… atoms exist and can be seen moving
under a microscope.
