EXPECTATIONS

This is your self-instructional learner module in English 3. All the

activities provided in this lesson will help you learn and understand:
Reading Words with Short U Sound in C-V-C Pattern.

PRETEST

Tell whether the underlined word in each sentence has an /u/ (uh)
sound. On the space before the number, write Y if the answer is YES,
and write N if the answer is No.

_____ 1. I always use my red umbrella whenever it is raining.

_____ 2. My mother hugs me every time of the day.
_____ 3. My favorite pet is a pup.
_____ 4. I bought a bag for my little sister.
_____ 5. The children love to play under the sun.

RECAP

In your previous lesson, you have learned that there are five
vowels in the alphabet. These vowels are a, e, i, o, and u, and each
of them has its own sound. We must learn the sound of each vowel
to help us become good readers.

1
Let us read the following sentences with the short o sound:

The pot is hot.

The fox can jump.

Bob got a mop.

LESSON

Today, let us talk about words with short u sound in C-V-C

pattern. Let us read the following words:

hut bun cup

2
The vowel in the middle of these words is the vowel “u”. Let’s
sound out the vowel “u”:/uh/ /uh/ /uh/.

Let us spell the word nun: h-u-t hut. The sound of “u “in the
word “hut” is /uh/. The second word is bun. Let us spell the word
bun: b-u-n bun. The sound of “u” in the word “bun” is /uh/. And
the last word is cup: c-u-p cup. The sound of u in the word “cup” is
/uh/.

Let’s read another set of words.

-ub -ug -um -un -ut

dub bug bum bun but

hub jug gum fun cut

pub mug hum gun gut

rub pug rum nun rut

tub rug sum pun nut

Let’s read these phrases!

a pug on a rug
a mug and a jug
a bug on the hut

Guided Practice
Let us read the following words. Clap your hands twice if the word
has the /uh/ sound and say “oops” if it doesn’t have the /uh/ sound.

Here’s the first one:

gum

3
If you clapped your hands twice, you are correct! The word
gum has the /uh/ sound. Let’s say it together, “gum”, “gum”,
“gum”. Have you eaten a bubble gum? What should we do with a
piece of gum after we chewed it? We should wrap it in a piece of
scrap paper and throw it in a trash bin. Next word is….

run

If you clapped your hands twice, you are right! The word run
has the /uh/ sound. Let’s say it together, “run”, “run”, “run”.

bed

If you said “oops”, you are right! The word bed doesn’t have
the /uh/ sound.

ACTIV I TIES

Activity 1
Read each word aloud. Circle all the words with the short U sound.

hug sin pan bat

can keg cub men

4
hen bug cat top

fun sad gel sun

Activity 2
List down 5 C-V-C words with short u sound that can be found at
home. Then recite the words in front of one of the members of the
family.

WRAP -UP

To wrap up everything that we have talked about in this

lesson, let us always remember that:
The letter u has a short vowel sound which is pronounced as
/uh/ / uh/ /uh/. For example, bus, cup, sun, gum, run, and many
others.

VALUING

work on the road and alleys to keep the surroundings clean so that
people may be healthy and free of sickness.

If you could give a gift to a street sweeper or any community

workers for the help they bring us, what would it be? Draw it inside
the box below.
