EEE 2210 Analogue Electronics II (45 Lecture Hours)

Prerequisites
EEE 2202 Analogue Electronics
EEE 2204 Physical Electronics I

Purpose
The aim of this course is to enable the student to;
1. understand operation of small signal amplifiers
2. understand application of power devices
3. understand the effect of feedback on amplifier characteristics and performance

Learning Outcomes
At the end of this course, the student should be able to;
1. analyze and design small signal amplifiers
2. design of simple firing control circuits

Course Description
Small signal Amplifiers: analysis of small signal amplifiers at medium frequencies using equivalent
circuits of bipolar transistor and field effect transistors (FETs), low frequency, performance voltage,
current and power gain, input and output impedance, determination of h-parameters. Design of amplifier
to meet given design specifications. Feedback: feedback effect on amplifier characteristics and
performance. Power devices: operation of silicon controlled rectifier (SCR), uni-junction transistors
(UJT), triac, gate-turn-off switch (GTO) and diac. Design of simple firing control circuits.

Teaching Methodology
2 hour lectures and 1 hour tutorial per week, and at least five 3-hour laboratory sessions per semester
organized on a rotational basis.

Mode of course assessment: Continuous assessment and written University examinations shall
contribute 30% and 70%, respectively of the total marks.
