tools with fine steel wool. Using an old toothbrush with some lightweight
lubricating oil is a great way to work fresh oil into the joints of most garden
tools. Not only will this fresh oil help your tool to work as it was intended, but
it will also prevent the formation of rust. Use medium-grit sandpaper to
remove rust on larger tools such as shovels, spades, and hoes.
Once your tools are cleaned, they're ready to be sharpened. When sharpening,
try to maintain the original factory bevel or angle. For pruners, use a
whetstone because it produces a very sharp cutting edge. Depending on the
type of whetstone, apply a few drops of oil or water to the stone. With the
beveled side of the blade against the stone, rub the sharp edge of the blade
toward the stone in a curved motion, as if you were trying to shave off a thin
slice from the stone.
When working with a file, stabilize the blades in a vise or against a solid
surface such as a work bench to avoid injury and ensure an even stroke.
Always push the file across the blade in a motion away from your body. Move
the file diagonally, so that its cutting teeth are biting into the metal on the tool.
When sharpening with a file, do not use oil; metal filings will accumulate and
clog the file's serrations.
Farm implements like ordinary plow and wooden harrow should be checked
thoroughly before use. Loosened bolts and nuts should be tightened firmly.
Disc plow and harrow should also be lubricated on their moving parts like
bearings. Tractors should be tuned-up very well by skilled operator. Check on
their oil, lubricant, fuel and cooling system.
Tools that are worn out should be separated and be fixed immediately to avoid
accident
Eight (8) Easy Steps on how to Clean and Care Garden Tools:
1. Remove Dirt- remove the dirt off the tools using water or powerful garden hose and a
putty knife.
2. Remove Rust- scrub the rusty tools with a steel wool.
3. Remove Sap- wipe the tools with a cloth dabbed of a lighter fluid to remove sap.
4. Soak Tools- after removing dirt and sap, soak the tools in a bucket of water and add a
dish soap to clean.
5. Rinse + Dry- rinse the tools with clean water then dry them with a cloth or towel.
2
6. Cleaning Maintenance- a bucket with sand and a cup of vegetable oil will keep the
tools in a good shape in a year-round by dipping larger tools in it at the end of a heavy
gardening day to remove dirt.
7. Disinfect- Periodically disinfect garden tools if you have plants with fungal or
bacterial problems using bleach-free disinfectant wipes.
8. Sanitizing Soak- Prevent the spread of infestations by quickly soaking the tools in a
bleach solution (two cups of bleach for every one gallon of water. Rinse and dry the
tools thoroughly.
How to Maintain Your Garden Tools and Keep them in Good Shape:
Follow the steps:
1. Prepare all the materials needed to clean and sharpen your tools like sandpaper,
whetstone, oil and rags.
2. Select a place in your shop where you can position your tools sturdily. Vise and
clamps are useful tools to hold your cutting tools tightly while being sanded or
cleaned.
3. Dismantle cutting tools like hedge shears to clean conveniently.
4. Sand the tools carefully to remove rust. Use whetstone to sharpen tools like knives,
bolos and shears. You can apply lubricating oil to prevent the formation of the rust.
5. Clean tools thoroughly and keep it in a dry place of your tool room.
