Experiment: Binary Coded Decimal (BCD) counter


• Aim:

To verify the truth table of a Binary Coded Decimal Counter


designed using the 74163 IC.
• Apparatus:

• Theory:
q

Due to its four preset inputs, the IC74163 is a fully


programmable binary counter. By applying a low signal to the
load pin, any loaded input can start the counter's operation. A
ripple-carry (RC) output terminal is offered for cascading
counters with n-bit synchronous counting.
The connections for a binary-coded decimal counter are made,
as shown in the image below.

Connect four outputs to four LEDs and deliver a clock pulse
with an input duty cycle of 50%, peak-to-peak amplitude of 6,
and frequency of 0.5 Hz. The LEDs react at the output to
confirm that the count progresses from 0000 (0 in the decimal
system) to 1111 (15 in the decimal system).
