SHIFT WORK
Buses run seven days a week and your work pattern would reflect that. Bus drivers work variable shifts which can start from as early
as 4am and can finish as late as 2am. There are late, early shifts and middle shifts as well as spread overs (split shifts). Spread overs can
be 10 – 12 hours and cover peak periods (7am to 9am and 4pm to 7pm on weekdays) and include a break of 2 – 4 hours of which
only 40 minutes is unpaid.
Shift patterns mean you could work 7 days in a row before your rest days. Working shifts is a lifestyle change and can have a huge
impact on your life if you have never worked shifts before. There may be occasions that you are allocated to work on short notice
(24 hours in advance).

You MUST be able to work the full range of shifts and you will not get a choice of shift pattern.
The following sample rota gives an idea of how the shifts work:

WEEK SAT SUN MON TUES WED THU FRI

1 REST REST Early Early Early Early Early
2 Early REST REST Late Late Late Late
3 Late Late Late REST REST Early Early
4 Early Early Early Early Early REST REST
5 REST REST Late Late Late Late Late

Please note that some weeks will have split rest days meaning that you won’t be resting 2 days in a row.

You will have to work on a Bank Holiday if you are on the rota for that day.

Can you work ANY shift pattern: YES  NO 

Are you able to get to and from work at any of these times of day? YES  NO 

Do you have commitments that you do on the same day each week? YES  NO 

Version 2 Nov 22
If yes, we cannot ensure that you will have a specific day off each week. This means you will miss this commitment if you are
scheduled to work. Do you accept this?
YES  NO 

Working at Arriva is a whole time occupation therefore if you do voluntary work or other work, you must declare this and seek
the agreement of your manager.

Will this be your SOLE, full time employment? YES  NO 

If no, please give details: _________________________________________________________

TRAINING

Trainee (non-PCV Holders)

The training is intensive and involves you passing your theory and practical tests as well as your CPC qualification which enables
you to drive a bus. The training takes approx. 3 weeks to complete, including 7 days on the road bus driving, and there is a lot of
reading and studying involved.

On your first day of training, you will have an induction. And during your 1st week you will take three 3 tests:

Module 1a – Multiple Choice Theory

Module 1b – Hazard Perception
Module 2 – Case Study

(We will let you know what books you will need to get and give you access to our online training to help you revise before you
start your training).

Once you have passed your theory tests, you will then be sent for your practical training with one of our own driving instructors,
or with an external driving partner.

You will have regular reviews of progress while you are in training. If you are unable to reach the required standard for the theory
tests, practical driving, or CPC qualification, we may have to end your employment. The guarantee of a permanent job depends
on you passing all stages of the training.

When you have obtained your PCV licence with us, we ask that you stay with Arriva for a minimum of 2 years from your first day
at your Garage. If you leave within 2 years, we will reclaim either all or part of the £2000 training bond (depending on length of
service) from you, towards the cost of the training (More details on the Main Condition of Employment section 19).

PCV Holder
On your first day, you will attend Induction at our Training School. Depending on your current experience, you may be required
to do some training to bring you up to Arriva London’s standards.

FURTHER INFORMATION

Probation
After successful completion of training, you will go to garage and you will be on probation for 6 months. This may be extended if
not passed. The most common reasons for a driver failing their probation is due to attendance, timekeeping or accidents.

Career
There are opportunities to progress your career within Arriva. Vacancies include office positions, Temporary Driving Instructors,
Controllers and Garage Supervisors etc. and are open to all employees.

Alcohol and Drug Policy

As a bus driver, you will be responsible for carrying our customers safely to their destination. Therefore, Arriva has a very strict
alcohol and drug policy. You must be aware of being over the limit the next morning if you drink the night before your shift. As
part of our company policy we randomly test 10% of our workforce each year as they arrive at work.
