COMPUTER SOFTWARE
I. Module Overview
You use software every time you use your desktop, notebook, or tablet
computer. In addition, you use software when you use your mobile phone, digital
camera, retail and banking machines, some home appliances, cars, some medical
devices, and much more. Software carries out your commands anytime you press
buttons or touch a screen to tell a machine what to do.
This module will discuss what is a computer software and its different
categories, basic functions and features of operating systems, and application
software.
The instructor/professor will show the user interface of some popular software
in his/her computer.
IV. Content Focus
Software - is any set of instructions that tells the hardware what to do. It is what
guides the hardware and tells it how to accomplish each task.
Some examples of software include web browsers, games, and word processors.
Categories of Software:
Systems Software - includes the operating system and all the utilities that
enable the computer to function.
System software is used by the computer for tasks that help the computer
work. For example, you use system software to run your computer and all
the programs on it. It can diagnose a problem with your hard drive, printer,
or Internet connection.
Systems Software
Operating System - An operating
system (OS) is software that starts up a
computer and keeps it running and
responding to your commands.
macOS
Linux
Just like Windows, iOS, and Mac OS, Linux is an operating system. In
fact, one of the most popular platforms on the planet, Android, is
powered by the Linux operating system.

Android is an open source and Linux-
based Operating System for mobile devices such as
smartphones and tablet computers. Android was
developed by the Open Handset Alliance, led by
Google, and other companies.
Android offers a unified approach to application
development for mobile devices which means
developers need only develop for Android, and their
applications should be able to run on different
devices powered by Android.
