Chairman’s Message
We are extremely pleased to be able to bring
Llangynidr Show back to life on Sunday August
27th, 2023.

Our last show was in 2019. We had 2 years of

enforced absence in 2020 & 2021 and then last
year we held a village fun day to rebuild local
awareness and regrow the team of volunteers. With
thanks to those whose support has seen us through
this difficult period, we are now able to get back to
running a full show.

This year we’ll have sheep classes and horse classes, as well as a dog show, stick
making, vintage vehicles and scarecrow competitions. The Garden Show will
be in the village hall as usual with a wide variety of gardening and craft classes.
Bwlch & Crickhowell YFC will again be running a Speed Shearing competition
after the main show running into the evening.

Alongside all these competitions we have market stalls and trade stands, and
shearing and spinning demonstrations. The main ring will be busy with attractions
that are popular every year, including Black Mountains Falconry, Abergavenny
Borough Band, Little Nippers terrier racing and much more. A range of food
stands and licensed bar will help to complete your day out. A particular focus
this year is on the number of local organisations running their own activities. As
an agricultural show society, the livestock competitions are central to what we
do, but we are also a local body supporting the community of Llangynidr and
the surrounding area. As such it is excellent to see the schools, sports clubs, craft
bodies, churches, charities and so many more organisations getting involved.
Between us we will provide a fantastic day of entertainment at the same time
as taking the opportunity to raise funds and awareness, recruit volunteers and
generally get more people involved in the life of the community.

The event is run by an excellent team of volunteers, both those on the year-
round organising committee and the many others who come along before,

Page 3
during and after the show to help out. Having chaired the society through the
thin years of 2020 and 2021, I am immensely grateful to all of them for their
ongoing support and for all their hard work for the 2022 Fun Day and now the
2023 Show. I would also like to express my sincere thanks to the landowners,
sponsors, advertisers and vice-presidents without whom we couldn’t run. And
of course thank you to you, the competitors and visitors who make Llangynidr
Agricultural Show such an enjoyable and interesting day.

Diolch yn fawr - Thank you very much.

Brian Cope

We acknowledge, with sincerity, the tremendous support given by Vice-Presidents,

Linda Games Award
Each year Llangynidr Agricultural Show Society make a financial award
in memory of Linda Games. Linda was not only a founding member of the
Society, but a teacher who taught generations of Llangynidr children and well
respected member of many of the village’s endeavours as well as being well
known in local agricultural circles.

The award is made to a resident of Llangynidr Parish for ‘personal development’.

The award was divided equally this year between two students as their
applications were of equal merit.

Watch out in ‘Contact’ and on local notice boards for further details. Applications
for the award are welcome from anyone residing in Llangynidr

The Linda Games Memorial Award is now in its second year of operation,
making contributions to individuals living within the Llangynidr Community
boundary to support their formal or informal education.

This year, two applicants were successful; the first is a local school pupil
needing some additional support, and the second is on a six year medical course
and the grant will help with books and course fees.

To display your vehicle in the static display of vintage tractors,

motor vehicles and machinery contact:

SHOWDAY CHARITY
Brecon Mountain Rescue Team
Brecon Mountain Rescue Team is a dedicated team of volunteers
providing an emergency rescue service 24-hours a day, 365 days-a-
year – saving the lives of those most in need, throughout mid Wales.
For more than 50 years, these dedicated volunteers have saved lives
throughout mid Wales, not only on the mountains, but also in towns,
rivers, and lakes across the region. We provide specialist search, medical, and rescue
services, and work closely with the police, ambulance, and fire services when they receive
a call for help, but are unable to find, reach or rescue those in need.

Brecon Mountain Rescue Team can access places that no other service can reach. As well
as finding, treating, and rescuing walkers, climbers, fell-runners, mountain bikers and
kayakers, they also assist the most vulnerable in our communities - people living with
dementia, people who are depressed or suicidal, flood victims, and missing adults and
children.

Television presenter, Kate Humble, who lives in the region, is the Team’s Ambassador.
Kate said: “The Brecon Mountain Rescue team receives no government or external
funding. Its members give up their time on an entirely voluntary basis. Their dedication,
professionalism and generosity has saved hundreds of lives over the years and never more
so than in recent times. As someone who has spent many happy hours walking in and
around the Brecon Beacons National Park, I am aware of what an enormous privilege it is
to have a team such as this in the local area. The work they do for this community and its
visitors is vital and invaluable”.

• Brecon Mountain Rescue Team is an emergency service staffed by 60 volunteers and

funded entirely by donations.
• Mountain rescue services are free to those in need because the teams are staffed by
volunteers. However, equipment, vehicles and maintaining a headquarters all cost
money, so those very same volunteers have to raise sufficient funds
to maintain the service. It costs approximately £55,000 per annum to run the team.
• The team cover a large area, from the Brecon Beacons National Park in the South to
Welshpool in the North East and Machynlleth in the North West.
• The team responds to around 120 call outs annually, with the peak season being April
to September during the busy tourist season.
• The work of BMRT is not restricted to rescuing climbers and hill walkers; their skills
are also deployed by the police to search for vulnerable or missing persons in the
community.
